since loading latest armor av 7.0.53 fw 5.1.039 and
cable broadband windows startup is much slower.

armor loads cav, cavrid, cavtray, ca , vetmss, isafe
plus as before vsmon, ca (8 in total!).
network connection startup a little slow but not too bad.

p4/3g 512mb with ez av/fw, ms aspy,
spyblaster, adaware, spybot +router firewall

q1 possible candidates to disable from above?
q2 utility to monitor each startup item, and
report when startup completed.

You have a whole host of things running on your system and it would be worth rationalising them.

It appears from your post that you are runnig both a software and hardware based firewall, you'd be better off ditching the software one and stick with the one in the router. This is assuming that it is a good quality router with a SPI firewall.

Also you have several anti spyware/malware packages running, again it would be better to determine which one has the best overall performance and just have that running permanently running on the system. Keep the others by all means but run them when you do a system sweep; not all the time.

My weapons of choice are Eset's NOD32 antivirus package and Webroot's Spy Sweeper. In the ten months since I started using them I've had no virus infiltrations and only one incidence of malware after installing a freeware package which Spy Sweeper happily removed.

NOD32 is reckoned to be one of the best packages on the market winning Virus Bulletin's 100% detection award a record 32 time; which equates to about seven years of not missing an 'in the wild' virus. It has a relatively small footprint and I've had it running on fairly low end Pentium 3's with every detection option turned on and noticed very little drop in system performance.

Several big names are known to use NOD32; amougnst them certain divisions of Microsoft, Dell and Nike US & UK to name but a few.

Likewise Spy Sweeper also has a small footprint, with Webroot regularly updating both the program and signature files.

Pricewise I don't know how these two products compare to your current packages. But as a I explain to my customers that I encourage to buy these products it is cheaper to purchase them than it is to call be out to clear up the mess created by not having them.

thanks gavin, my assessment on speed is the increased delay,
since av/fw and bb upgrades. i don't agree about ditching the
software fw. i have actually reduced my security apps.
i'm keeping ms as & w/patrol until the ms beta runs out.
my av/fw sub runs until 06.06.

Start up delay can be due to:

1.) the WIA (Windows Imaging) Service looking for Cameras/Scanners at boot... Set this Service to MANUAL....

2.) TCP/IP - it looks for a present Network, which on a single PC is kinda Futile/unwanted.... Go to your Network Connections, the LAN (NIC) right click on it, scroll down to the TCP/IP Protocall, Click on EXTENDED/ADVANCED there set your IP adress to 192.168.0.X (where X is any value you like above 1 (omit 0 as this usually is the Routers IP))...

3.) When XP starts it also scans for NETWORK Drives, which like above, if you don't have a Home Network or are on a Network, it is unwanted... Explorer, Extras, Folderoptions, View tab, there the 2nd option should state something like, Search for Network Drive and Printers... Deactivate that option...

Have fun...

hi bbb, thanks for the tips, good advice which i half remembered when you prompted (i'm getting on now).

i don't run a network, but have 2 pcs attached to the router,
but usually just run the one (with the same vdu as i'm so lazy)
so your tips are great. nb why aren't such options at a system option/top menu? doh.
