Hi, i've been having problems with my GeForce4 MX 420, my setup is: Athlon XP +2100, MB VIAKT333/something else, from Biostar model M7VIP. 256 PC2100 DDR from Kingston, and a 80 GB 7200 RPM HDD from Seagate. On winxp.

I have constant slowdowns on almost all my games, Warcraft III, Quake III, Fifa 2003, etc, all of them are updated, except for Max Payne wich is the only one that dosent appear to have that problem. Even 3D Mark 2001 SE shows slowdowns. And I dont know what else to do, I have tried all the detonator drives from 30.82 and up to 42.01, I have installed DX9. I have tried adjusting the refresh rate, the AGP and nope, nothing.

Anybody knows how to fix this???

P.S. the slowdowns are just momentary and about for 1 sec, and them some 3-5 secs and again, and in the FPS on QUAKE III it shows 90 fps, then 60 or so, and the 90 again!. This is really anoying while trying to play some games.

Other configuration: 1024x768 ,32 . But I have tried in allmost all of the screen size and no luck!, so I dont think this is the problem. And with 32 and 16 bit and nothing!.

Sounds about right for a lowley GF4 420MX.
I am bemused by how you can see any appreciable differance between 60 and 90fps as 60 looks completely smooth.

Sorry that wasn't too helpful!
Try sellective startup to disable running programs, by a process of illimination you may be able to pinpoint the problem. (type msconfig in run) then sellective startup, be careful what you uncheck. Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Trying that, but the problem is the small glitch, or hick-up or something like that called, that makes the game slow for a second, that makes me notice it, because other wise it would be o.k, but that second makes a diferent while playing any game.

Thanks for the Advice, I'll try and cross my fingers.

Thanks for the help, I will try Blckviper tweaks today, to see if they work!.

I also uninstalled directx9 and the slowdowns seem to be a bit less offen but the image is still slowing down, but I'll try this method!.

Tried the services stuff, and its better, but there still a little hic-up on periodicly on all my games, except for max payne, any other suggestions????

I have the same problem on a dual boot system. The video card runs great under Win98 but slows down about 40% under XP Pro-I've changed out everything except the MB and the only common thread is the VIA KT333 chipset. The card runs fine on a second machine with XP and an AMD chipset. I think VIA needs to rework the drivers for XP. I'm switching to an AMD chipset MB to see if that clears up the problem.

I got it to be working decently but upon installing SP1 on XP it went back to the slowdowns, but I uninstalled SP1 and again!!!!!, this sucks!!!, so I reinstalled everything, from XP, then tested, nope, then de 443 for the VIA MB, and again same thing, then all the detonators from 30.82 to 42.01, and the same!, and I also noticed that the DVD playback now sucks!!!!, I runing out of things to think about!!!!, My TNT2 32MB card other PC its more smoother than this one!, but if the card works well on one game!, it should do in all others (well D3D) games min!.

Any other sugestions?

So I found the cure to my problem!, after many hours I decided to make a new partition on my HD and install another OS (Win98SE) and to my surprise that was it!!!!, the Gf4 now runs great on all GL and D3D games!!!!!, plus my 3dmarks are almost the same as in winxp (20 marks dif!), and all the other benchmarks are even better or the same!, So it was the damed winXP!!!!!.

Also the Via 4-1 is the 4.41 version, not the 4.43 and the Detonators are th 30.82 that came with my card. DX is 8.1 from the card cd as well.

Well it was so many hours with this prob!, but its better now. But I still want to make XP to work the same way so if you have more sugestions they are more than welcomed!
