Here is our setup:

Windows XP SP1 on a windows 2k server domain network, roaming profiles, etc.

His computer is always running applications very slow. I have tried registry cleaners etc. and nothing helps. I have scanned for viruses and for spyware, no dice. I am not sure where to go from here. I just built the computer for him and he has the most powerful system in the office. His last computer got slow and cumbersome even though it had dual 2.0 GHz Pentiums in it and 1 GB of RAM and plenty of HDD space. Help. Thank you.

I've seen this happen before on even the best systems. There could be so many problems that could cause this. I would re-install the OS without the network plugged in and right away create a restricted user for him to log into. Then plug up the network... That's one solution.. No one else on the network has this problem of machines running slow?

No one else except maybe one user. Both have access to install anything they want, and both usually have some unneeded programs on their desktops.

Have you tried disabling the roaming profile? Somtimes if they are not configured correctly they can cause slow down issues. You will want to make sure you have the profile backed up ofcourse.

Are these DOS applications that are running slow? Are printers installed through a share on a server or is the user directly connecting to the IP of the printer?

Is the user generating and excessively large number of packets when he makes network queries?

I have some solutions based on these questions.

There are no DOS programs, it is all win32 apps. It seems as if it takes a while for programs to fully execute; there is much processing during that time. Once running, the programs seem to respond in an acceptable amount of time.

There is a mix of both shared printers and server printers.

There is an excessively large amount of packets sending and receiving during network queries. Usually 2-3 thousand when browsing the network.

Ok, I had this occur on Windows XP as well, stumped me for a long time. What I did to resolve it was to remove both QoS and File and print sharing from the TCP settings and then re-add those services. I also mapped printers to the printer IP instead of through a server. This was done due to Microsoft Word for example requiring a mapped printer before it opens a document.

Let me know if these steps work.
