I have a 17" IMAC G5 with Tiger OS 10.4. I seem to have problems browsing files on a Windows 2000 and 2003 server..., sometimes. It will respond quickly sometimes, other times, it just hangs with the spinning beach ball. Any ideas what would cause this delay?

Are you connecting using samba or afp? The afp connection to a windows server is slow, while the samba connection is fast, but can be unreliable at times.

On both servers, I do not specify a protocol such as afp or smb, all I use is the ip address. Should I specify protocol?

Mac defaults to afp for the protocol, so there is no reason to specify it - imo. If you want to use samba, then yes you need to specify it.
