I have a Windows 2K computer in an AD Tree. Whenever the user opens anything from Office, or a large file of any sort (large meaning maybe a meg - 5 meg) it takes around 45 seconds to 3 minutes to open. First I thought the network card, had that replaced, nothing. Re-imaged the machine, nothing. New network cable, nothing. Ram? Tried that as well it's 768 on a Pentium M laptop. I had the user try from a different machine with their sign in. No problems. Had the user move to a different office and use someone elses jack - No problems there. If the user moves the file to her desktop and works on opening it and closing it there, no problems either. It's only when going across a network drive. I can ping the server and get good responses avg 45ms. (server is in another state). Ideas on what can be causing this, or different things to try?

There is an issue with the cabling between walljack and switch, or the physical port on the switch itself.

My bad, There was a problem when they moved to the other office with the laptop. They still had the slow link. Sorry.

A ping of 45ms. is pretty slow, so your WAN link is relatively slow.

How up-to-date is the Service Pack level of the server?
How up-to-date is the Service Pack level of the client?

A lot of the issues with SMB signing and opportunistic locking were dealt with in the Service Packs, and dealt with further with XP in SP2.

A discussion and set of links to the possible issues:

45 is not bad for running across state lines on our WAN.

Both systems are at SP4 with all critical updates applied.

I'll try some of those solutions on the links and see what I come up with. Thanks for the posts.

Watch out for delays caused by your Antivirus program scanning the file.
