my XP professional is so slow start up . it takes around 5 mints to start my work after start up . how can i reduce start up time ?

Rebuild it.

Another option would be to check how many icons are loading into your tray at starup and eliminate any that you don't need launched at startup as they can slow down your boot time. Clean up temp files, uninstall unneeded programs, defrag etc, etc.

@satellite03 - Rebuild is the last option here!!!!

1.) disable or set to manual the WIA Service under services...

and

2.) under Network connections, right click the NIC card, click on TCP/IP and go to Extended there set your IP adress from Dynamic to a STATIC value, ie. 192.168.x.x (where x is any value you choose) {this adress range is reserved for Local Networks}, and the SubNetmask should come out to 255.255.255.0 (this is ok)...

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).
Do you have this problem if disconnected from any Network?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors.

I had faced the same problem. Try defragmenting your HD, it worked for me. Not only did it solve this, i also find that my PC is performing better now. File copying and transfers which used to be kind of slow too have become faster and i feel other applications are quicker too. Even for desktops/workstations this would be good.
You can try using Windows Disk defragmenter but its kind of slow. A better option would be any of the other third party defrag tools available, they are faster and have some advanced features like automatic scheduling.

>Rebuild it.

what does rebuild means? is there any chance of my data loss if i rebuild ?

>Another option would be to check how many icons are loading >into your tray at starup and eliminate any that you don't >need launched at startup as they can slow down your boot >time. Clean up temp files, uninstall unneeded programs, >defrag etc, etc.

yea, there are 14 icons in the tray.

the programs in the system tray are,

Mcafee Ent 8.0i
winzip quick pick
HP printer
Intel Extreme graphics
windows update icon
Nokia PC suite
yahoo messenger(not connected)
MSN messenger(not connected)
INCD
3D Audio config
Volume controller
safely remove hardware

assuming this initial start up delay is becoz of these staup programs, i did

>run msconfig>start-up tab > tried to uncheck some known installed program(but not windows programs). after that windows told to restart , i pressed OK and the machine got restarted. when i logged in , windows satrted with "found new hardware " and "windows installer" and tried to install driver!!

anyway, i spent lot of time again uninstalling and installing driver. but the problem remains Unsolved. It seems there is no way out.

By the Way, some of you have told Rebuild, and Defragmentation. wow, these technical terms are killing me.i dont know how can i do it.is there any chance of data loss if i do the above ?

i cleared temp files, delete cookies,History etc from the IE but no , no success.

i saw in the net there is a third party software "Error Guard" which claims they can reduce the start-up time ? is it good ? any body tested ?

or do you know any third party software whcih can do it(for dummies only plz)?

How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP

If this doesn't help you and you want to think about the "rebuild", a term I assume to mean repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files and programs will be untouched.

@satellite03 - have you checked and done the two points I mentioned? if Yes and it didn't help then I will just be quiet for now...

If NO, then do check them... for I have found that 95% of the time one or two of those are the culprit when it comes to slow startups... of course there are more aswell to consider...

Hi, @BadBigBen

you have quoted 2 things

1.) disable or set to manual the WIA Service under services...

well, i exactly do not know how can i do it. whats this WIA ? well, how do i start ? i checked with

Task-Manger>application
Task-Manger>process

No, i did not find any so called service you are talking about. will you (or anybody who is reading) plz tell me the path/steps about what he is saying ? in the mean time i am investing in the google to unravel his statements.

and

2.) under Network connections, right click the NIC card, click on TCP/IP and go to Extended there set your IP adress from Dynamic to a STATIC value, ie. 192.168.x.x (where x is any value you choose) {this adress range is reserved for Local Networks}, and the SubNetmask should come out to 255.255.255.0 (this is ok)...

yea, this part i checked. i am connected with infrared GPRS mobile internet connection. i see, the default internet is working in "automatic IP " and "automatic DNS " in the TCP/IP configauration and the net is working fine. and i am not using any IP,DNS address in those text boxes and the net is working fine.

So, i have to test with your first solution.

1.) go to Start then Run, type "services.msc /s" (without the quotes), search for the WIA service (I'm sorry but I am using a foreign language version of XP and thus some of the translations are a bit off), set this to MANUAL... this will ensure that if it is needed by any program/device that it will be available when needed...

XP, at startup, when this service is enabled (automatic) will search for Cameras/Scanners and the like, thus slowing down Boot time...

2.) even if your net works fine, the deal is simple, when XP starts up, it will search for a Local Network, when it doesn't find one will set a DYNAMIC IP adress, and this can take time... so by setting the TCP/IP Network adress manually (static) this search will not be performed... thus speeding up boot time...

Disable, not uninstall, any unused network adapters. Each can cost you nearly three minutes attempting to obtain a DHCP IP address. Use Device Manager, expand the listing for Network adapters, and right-click to disable.

@BadBigBen
thanks for the response . your first solution , i can do it.

Ok . but i dont use Network address. what i use in my NOKIA set is just type in the subscribers name only. No proxy, no IP. and it gets connected to the hand set . and same thing i do when i use the dial up by "99**1#" the infrared modem activates and net starts working.

so, i can not key-in my static IP address because i dont know even, things are automatic. so, this part is for LAN users. and i am not in a LAN. so, i can not do it.

as i told earlier, there is no LAN in my machine. infrared adapter makes infrared modem activates when i press "dial-up". well, do u mean to disable the modem ? but i am using dial up. unless i press, it does nothing and modem says "infrared modem not present". as soon as i dial up modem starts with data.

thanks for the post.

If your PC has a NIC (Network Interface Card) then XP will automatically install drivers for it (and link the TCP/IP to it), even though you are not connected through it to a LAN or are a LAN user...

That is why you should still set its IP adress to a static (fixed) IP... this will not interfere with your Infrared connection at all...

@BadBigBen

i have set WIA service to "manual" but i could not do your second solution.(because i dont have any subnet mask etc etc)

i opened TCP/IP i found "automatic IP address or manual settings "

and "automatic DNS or manual DNS option"

i left it default.

However, after setting WIA to "Manual" , i have noticed , i am getting the Windows Login very fast. but after login, its taking long time before i could start some work.( may be some programs are initializing.)
thanks atleast some progress i have achieved, some improvement i have got.
