Our main DC and operations master takes over 20 minutes to restart (15 minutes to shut down, 5-10 to come back up). Our other DCs and member servers don't do this. I don't see anything weird in the event logs. Exchange is not installed on this server. Any suggestions?

Check the GPO for the domain controllers and see if they have the setting to clear the page file enabled? I know that when we disabled this on our servers it look 1/5th the time to shutdown.

stop a bunch of services before you reboot and then see if it goes quicker - then try and narrow it down to which service is causing the problem. Is this server running the backups? Tape Drives have been know to cause these types of problems in the past.

Two things I found out with one of my servers.

1.) Large RAID Disks need time to sync up.

2.) Norton Corporate Antivirus and PC Anywhere have a bug in the Live Update that can cause slow shutdowns and even cause the blue screen of death. If you have these loaded, check out the Symantec Knowledgebase for a utility to fix the issue.

Thanks for the tips. We don't have Norton Antivirus on the server, and we have identical RAID setups on other server on which we have no problem. This server does in fact have an external tape drive that we use to backup several servers. I'll have to pursue this will Dell. Maybe a firmware upgrade or a Windows driver update.

Kepp 'em coming!

I recently read that if you are running exchange server that it is better to stop all the services related Exchange before doing the restart. I was experiencing 10 minute reboots and after killing those services, it only takes about 5. (Still feels like an eternity)

We are running exchange server, but not on the affected machine. You're talking about running Exchange on the same server, right?

Yeah, I saw that too, but this isn't an exchange server. (In fact, our Exchange server reboots much more quickly.)
