Hi, I've got an SBS2000 with 4 XP workstations. All is working (exchange+mail, internet, file shareing etc') BUT the network is 2 slow. for example - to logon to the network takes about 2 min, to print a document to a shared printer takes long time, to view a shared folder takes long time and so on ...
I belive my problem is with the DNS and my proof is that when I ping "computernam.domainname.local" I get unknown host error - which is bad !
I just dont know how 2 fix it.

Please help
Thanx...

Yes it is(192.168.1.100). And the second DNS is empty, And the default gatway is set to the Router IP (192.168.1.1).

Have you configured your DNS server? Try nslookup computernam.domainname.local and see if you are able to resolve it to an IP address.

I did configur my DNS server - probably wrong !
And I cant ping computernam.domainname.local to get an IP, jus if I ping my self - example - if i'm on the sbs and I ping sbs.domainnam.local i'll get the ip but if I ping othercomputer.domainname.local I get unknown host error.

Now Im looking in the DNS settings in the server and on the "Revers Lookup Zones" I can see one zone "192.168.0.x subnet" but my LAN is 192.168.1.x !! could that be my problem ?!

And what about the Primery DNS in the server should it be config to the server ip (him self ? 192.168.1.100) or should it be the router IP ? 192.168.1.1 ?

Let it point to itself. Set up in the properties of the DNS server, Forwarders to your external isp dns. This way anything the server cannot resolve will be forwarded to the ISPs dns.

How do I add the new forworder to the DNS ? is it "New Host" "New Alias" "New Domain" or "New Deligation" ?

"How do I add the new forworder to the DNS ? is it "New Host" "New Alias" "New Domain" or "New Deligation" ?"

No. Setup forwarder of a server in the properties of the server in DNS snap in.

Set up the follow:

1. I added manually the host IP and names in the "forworder" and "reversed lookup"
2. I added another host with "(same as parent folder)" name to the ISP DNS IP.
3. All the PC's DNS are set to local DNS (my server 192.168.1.100)

Resault:
1. Istill can not ping computernam.domainname.local to othe PC's (just to my self)
2. Now I dont have iinternet access in any pc's

What is wrong ?!
What should I do ?!
PLEASE help me !

On your'e server, make sure the first dns address is itself, and the second is your isp in the tcp/ip settings.
Now Im looking in the DNS settings in the server and on the "Revers Lookup Zones" I can see one zone "192.168.0.x subnet" but my LAN is 192.168.1.x !! could that be my problem ?! Since nothing is working, blow away the 192.168.0.x and add the correct one. Shouldn't matter except if your subnetting is set up wrong, you wouldn't get the entire range. Try adding a hosts file to a workstation, with the correct ip info for the server, then ping it and let us know what happens.
