Slow mail delivery 1

Our email server has been running for a couple of years, and I’ve not really noticed any problems with the mail transport before. That’s not to say there haven’t been problems, but it generally just delivers mail, and there have only been a limited number of occasions when a user has complained that email has taken a long while to arrive at its destination. However, I had a couple of complaints this week that some emails have taken ages to arrive. One was sent during the day, and it didn’t arrive until midnight. I don’t know much about PostFix, and have had to look up the various commands. I’ve run ‘mailq’ and that is currently listing around 21 messages (it was about 53 an hour ago). Many of the messages listed in the queue have the following format

345484E370 12255 Wed Jul 19 08:14:20 kathleen@mydomain.co.uk
(conversation with smtp.saqnet.co.uk[195.2.156.65] timed out while sending MAIL
FROM)
office@destinationdomain.co.uk

This message was sent at 8:14, and it’s now just after mid-day. However, I’ve been able to send a test message to a webmail account, and that was delivered fairly soon after sending.

I’ve looked at the /var/log/mail log file, and that has entries saying

ms1 imapd[20571]: idle for too long, closing connection

Our ISP says there are no problems with their mail server. We are sending all mail via their relay server. I’ve listed the output of ‘postconf’ below. Is it something to do with the one of the smtp timeout parameters? I notice that some are in the region of 5minutes (300s), and I read somewhere that if messages can’t be delivered then Postfix increases the time period between each retry.

When I checked the files in the /var/spool/postfix directory, there was a total of 20MB. Yesterday when I checked it, it was 80MB in size, so we’re probably quite heavy users, with a fair number of message attachments.

I’d appreciate with determining if we have a problem, and if so, how to tune the system to fix it.

Postconf output…

Hi Nashcom,

I've seen the error "timed out while sending MAIL FROM" a few times when there's an MTU issue on your MTA's NIC. Not because your MTA is the problem but that a node inbetween you and the recipient MTA is causing the problem.

hotmail.com was an issue for my lcoal MTA until I dropped the MTU to 1468 (over the default 1500).

Try dropping the MTU on your MTA to something lower than the default.

Cheers
millap

Hi Millap

Thanks for that. It's been a few weeks since I posted my question, and I think the server is running okay now. My brain's like a sieve these days, and I'm trying to recall if I did anything, or if it just sorted itself out...

I think the ISP found some problems at that time - their mailrelay had been blacklisted, so maybe that had something to do with it. Either way, I've not seen a repeat of the problem. However, I'll keep your tip in mind if anything similar happens in the future.

Thanks again

David
