I have a network with a Windows 2000 server and 5 Win2k boxes and 1 WinXP and the XP computer takes forever to logon. I was wondering if any body knew what i could do to speed this up.

Thanks,
Fritts

There are a lot of things to look at. First check out your XP machine and see what is loading on startup. Make sure you don't have any spyware programs running. I'd also suggest making sure you are up to date on all hotifxes with Windows Update.

Second thing I would look at is your Group Policy implementation. See what you are applying to the client. Many administrators don't know that they can create custom administrative templates for AD which reduces the size of the files to be applied to the local machine. Figure out the dozen settings you are setting with GPO and remove the 800 you are not by making a custom ADM template. A review of system.adm will giv eyou an idea of how the file is made up. The process is tedious and can take you a few hours, but I have reduced GPO sizes from 2MB down to 22KB.

If you still encounter problems, try removing the XP machine from the domain and delete the machine account. Then re-add it to the domain.

Slow logon with windows XP is good indication that DNS setup is wrong. Check DNS settings and DNS server is set up correctly.

Thanks Guys i'll check out your suggestions

Sincerely,
Fritts
