Hello Everyone,

I just installed a win2k server and noticed XP clients need approx. 2 minutes to log in while win2k clients can quickly get in usually within 10 secs.

The DNS setting on the NIC is pointing to the server as well as an alternate address.

Also, the drive mappings become unreachable after a few hours. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Zed

Event Type: Warning

Event Category: None

Description:
Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed because no DNS servers are available.

What are the DNS settings on the clients and what is the alternate DNS address you mention?

DNS setting points back to server IP and the alternate address is the ISP's address.

On the server and clients, what is your setting for "use netbios over tcp/ip"?

If you dissable the windows firewall in XP, how long does it take to logon?

Remove the alternate to your IPS, can you still reach the internet from the XP machines going through only your DNS server?

Netbios over tcp/ip:

Server: Enable Netbios over tcp/ip
Clients: Default: Use Netbios from the DHCP server.

Firewall is disabled & alternate address removed.

Still slow.

Thanks

Check DHCP. One of the options is for DHCP to register the DNS record. Uncheck this option as it is not needed for Win2k and up. It will interfere with the PC's updating themselves in DNS (the type of error you are getting is a DNS update error).

Make sure you are passing the following options...

003-default gateway: The IP address to your router.
006-DNS servers: The IP address to your DNS server.
015-DNS Domain Name: The name to your domain, i.e. mydomain.com

Check your DNS. If your PC's are not on the domain, it will not update in DNS properly if you have secure dynamic update enabled.

Still very slow XP log in. DNS looks OK when I ipconfig /all from the clients.

Any other suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

When I disable Netbios over TCP/IP in WINS on the local PC tcp/ip, logon is normal.

Although my drive mappings are visible, I am unable to open them and a message appears when I double click: "The system detected a possible attempt to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you."

Thanks
