I just put a system together, everything seems to work well, but when it goes to the win 98 screen, it takes about 5 minutes before it goes to the desktop. I have 64mb or ram, could it be the processor? Any ideas?

thanks.

It could be a multiple of things. Programs loading on startup, or massive programs under the STARTUP directory. Check these settings, they may load down your system regardless of how much RAM you have....

- If you decide to do all these steps do a full backup and make sure that it works then read all the steps below before you start implementing them.
- Write down every step you take before you do them and do one step at a time!!!

First try to figure out if it is a hardware or software related problem.
1. Turn on your PC and hold down F8 to get to Windows98 startup options. Choose 3. Safe mode. See if it still hangs for 5 minutes booting in. If it still does than start looking for hardware component issues. Unplug everything and take out all cards from slots that you don't have to have to operate. See if that helps. If it doesn't than try swapping components like processor, memory SIMMS. Anyhow try narrowing it down to a particular hardware component.
2. If it boots at a normal speed into Safe Mode. While still in Safe Mode go: Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager and remove any hardware listed that is not installed anymore or have multiple entries. Reboot and see if it works OK now.
3. If it still doesn't work run msconfig in the OS, click on the Startup TAB and disable pretty much everything under the startup tab but SystemTray, Taskmonitor and LoadPowerProfile, reboot and see if it still gets stuck for 5 minutes. If it isn't then go back to msconfig and try reenabling things one by one, reboot and see if you catch the source of the problem that way.
4. If it still hangs go back to msconfig and try finding things under System.ini under their [boot] section that look suspicious or under Win.ini under the [windows] section look for boot= and/or load= statements and disable those.

After your description of the problem I have the feeling that the OS is trying to load either a device or a driver of a device or a Memory Resident program or just tries doing something that it gets stuck on for 5 minutes before it is able to resolve it. If it still doesn't work after taking all of these step I'd try 3 more things.
1. Boot to DOS and run Scanreg /fix, reboot and see the results
2. Boot to DOS and run Scanreg /restore, restore to a previous version of the registry if any is available and reboot and see the results.
3. Boot with F8 2. Logged (bootlog.txt) option, after getting into OS look at the log file "bootlog.txt" and try finding lines that say failed. Try identifying which device or program they belong to and go from there

Good Luck
