I have a Maxtor hard drive and an Athlon 1.1 Ghz with 390MB RAM. I am also running Windows XP. Recently I have been having problems with my system slowing down and booting up very slow. I ran system benchmarks and discovered that I was only getting around 2MB/s throughput from the hdd. Any ideas how to fix this? Is it the IDE cable or could it be a resource conflict?(although nothing indicates this?) Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Make sure the cache settings are enabled, drivers updated, enable DMA tranfers, if the ATA is adjustable like WD's, then crank it up. Sounds like a resource conflict. Have you gone to system information wizard. It can tell you alot about your system that you didn't know about.

Make sure you are not in MSDOS compatability mode. This would make everything seem really slow. This is an operating system problem. Sometimes it just requires some special drivers to avoid it. Some chipsets have special drivers so the OS can recognize the hardware properly. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Make sure L1 & L2 cashe are enabled in the BIOS.
