Slow Drill Down "Look In"

I am suddenly having a strange problem on my PC.

When I drill down to drives or folders from Windows Explorer, everything is fine.

When I drill down from a box to Open a File or Insert and Document -- the PC takes about 30 seconds to get to each next level of folder.

Anyone have any ideas about this?
 
do you have any network drives that list in My Computer? Sometimes those take a while to list. Another problem I've had is when my CD-ROM was failing (or just a bad CD), Windows had a hard time communicating with it and that made it take a while.
 
There are network drives and a CD.
This problem just started, however.
 
try taking out the CD and see if that solves anything. What's happening is that when you click on the drop-down arrow, explorer is queriying: 1- are there any drives connected, if so what are they; 2- are they valid, and get the drive label from them. it's a slow and inefficient process for the computer anyway, but it's quite reliable until one or more of the media stop responding correctly. You'll need to narrow down which one is causing the delay.
 
Example:

I am inserting a .pdf file into an email.
It is in c:\temp\filename.pdf

I click on Insert, File.
Outlook defaults to My Documents folder.
I click on the Down Arrow...wait...wait...wait.

I am not accessing the CD at all.

However, I will remove the CD and re test.
 
Have you tried the "Detect and Repair" from Outlook's Help menu?

Have you tried System Restore?

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Is it better if you temporarily disable any virus or security software?

Try another user profile and see if there is still a problem?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
