Slow dial-up connection 3

Hello everybody!

I've got a US Robotics modem. When using dial-up connection to the Internet, I used to get a speed of 52.0 or above. But recently i noticed the connection had become quite slow so i formatted my PC but the problem was not solved. My speed has dropped down to 49.2 and 45.9. in one connection it even dropped down to 33.6. Is it that my modem is getting corrupt or is the source of the problem elsewhere? Please help. Thanks.
 
Hmmm...there are many factors affecting connection speed, I assume over phone lines. It could be that your request for a connection does not have the priority it once had. Modems will step-down your speed and find the highest stable link, 49.2 and 45.9 Mbps are actually quite good. Connecting through a PBX or phone system slows down your speed too, my backup dialup is only good for 28.8K over our phone system.

Your Internet Service Provider would be the best one to contact. This is a snippet from :

* Make sure that you and your Internet service provider use the same 56K protocols. 56K requires that both ends have 56K modems, and they both have to use the same kind of 56K technology (x2, K56flex, or V.90). Despite what you may have heard, V.90 is not the same as x2 or K56flex. It is a third and distinct 56K protocol. Your ISP will be able to tell you which protocol they use.
* Some Internet service providers have separate phone numbers for 56K. Make sure you're calling the right number.

Thanks Tony, but i'm not sure problem could be with ISP. I've tried two different ISPs but with same results. And there's something else I forgot to mention. Often when having surfed for a period of time, I start getting "Page cannot be displayed" for lots of sites, even when logging out from email accounts like Yahoo mail. As a result i simply have to disconnect.
 
It is, pretty much, all about your phone line.

I serviced a home that no matter *WHAT*, I couldn't connect. Even had the phone company come out and put the customer on a different pair. Couldn't connect.

Since it is fall, and I'm making an assumption that it is getting cooler, change in the electrical properties of your phone line to the dmarc can be an issue. Additionally, if the phone company changed your cross-connect, or if you're getting any kind of cross-talk, bad ground, inductance hum, etc. that will greatly affect your speed.

Unfortunately, the phone company only "guarantees" 9600 baud. So, if you do call them, they'll send out some schmoe with a tester, who will dial a number at the Central Office (CO), and if he connects at 9600, he'll look at you, smile, and say "I can't find a problem."

When you complain to the telco, never ever mention a modem. Tell them you hear static. That alone will usually get you switched to a different pair.
