Many time when I am deleting files in Win XP, it almost seems like my system is hanging and could take up to 30 seconds to delete even just 1 shortcut, why would this be? Like a said before it is many times on shortcuts that I see this delay and sometimes it is instantaneous. I am running Win XP PRo XP1a with P4 2.6 Ghz. It shouldn't be slow, eveything else is zooming!! Any ideas?

Thanks,
Wes

It is a networked computer, but not a member of a domain. It is connected to a Linksys router and then through a cable modem.

Also, thanks for the tip about the registry, I did a reinstall of XP overtop of an existing XP install and maybe the registry has a bunch of crap in it. Anything else you can think of?

I observe this problem, as well. About 30 seconds to delete a file... big or small. Also, this ONLY happens to the first attempt to delete that occurs since the last bootup. After waiting the 30 seconds, and deleting a file, all susequent deletes are normal.... until the next bootup. Do you observe that also?

I've had this problem from time to time,

Mine turned out to be a driver issue with a cf reader that was having trouble.

I did the ctrl-alt-del to bring up task manager and noticed the cpu usage was 100% you can look there to se if there is a program hosing up the system and then find and delete it.

The spy and virus items are a must as well.

New Clue: It was previously determined that this delete delay only happens to the first file that is deleted since the previous reboot... and all subsequent deletes are normal. It now appears that it only happens to the first file that is sent to the Recyle Bin. In other words, after a re-boot, Shift-Delete will delete any number of files normally. But Delete will cause the 30-second delay, after which all subsequent file deletes are normal.

I totally agree! Thats is exactly what mine does too. Anyone have any ideas why? Was yours a reinstall of XP or new?

Mine was a factory (Dell) install on a new PC. (It's actually XP Home... apologies for slipping into the wrong forum, but the behavior seems to be identical.)
