Hi

I am running Windows XP on a laptop with a PIII 850Mhz processor and 128MB Ram. Despite this the computer takes ages to start and all my programmes such as Word (also XP) takes much longer than it does on a mates computer. How can I improve the performance?

Citrix, I couldn't agree more about XP! Everyone is so quick to bash it nowadays, when in fact like you said, it's just a "purty" version of 2000 with some added bells and whistles.

As far as I know, they only changed some of the default settings and added features to the 2000 OS to make XP. It is tougher to bend XP to your liking than 2000 was - I'll give anyone that. But if you set it up right, there's nothing 2000 can do that XP can't.

Also when people compare XP to 98, of course 98 is going to run faster on any system. That's because XP demands more from your hardware. THAT'S HOW IT WAS MEANT TO BE. XP will still run faster on "most" machines than 2000 would. That's one of those "bells & whistles".

Time to put those 1GHz+ pc's to work...don't bother with your 600Mhz CPU!!

We just transferred 3 of our windows 2000 computers to windows XP on our network and these machines are not little hardware lacking machines (they're 2.0Ghz, 512Meg DDR Memory, 266 Front side BUS, 64Meg Nvidia Video, 7200 RMP Hard Drives), and XP runs great on the machines! BUT... As soon as you try and access the server or any other machine on the network, it is TOO slow. It takes a LONG time. Me are trying to find out any issues and we are trying to see if it may be something to do with the server settings and security. We are also going to throw a packet analyzer on the network to see what is going on. I know what the problem is,,, Microshaft! But, our windows 2000 machines runs great with no problems...

Also, Access 2000 does not run very well on XP either... We are doing a little research on that, but a few of our apps in Access 2000 do NOT work. Only if you REBOOT, it will open the apps! (If it is one of the first things you do...) There are definitely some issues withe the "TANK of METAL"

I'm with Citrix and CDogg on this one. I run Xp Pro at home and at work, and it just powers along in both

(home system - 950Mhz Duron & 128Mb DDR)
(work system - PIII 1Ghz & 128Mb PC133)

I've actually had faster network loading times on certain applications, especially the 4th Dimension Databases that we use. Yes, I agree that an extra 128Mb of memory on each machine would speed it up even more, but I find that if you turn off a couple of settings, especially the Indexing Service, the performance increase from that is phenomenal....
check out black vipers page of XP tweaks and try some of these to increase performance......
