Slow boot up

Hi,

I recently downloaded a rar file, 1.2GIG and was having problems opening it. My computer crashed and i had to switch it off and restart. I have now noticed that when I turn my computer on, it takes 2.5 minutes longer to get past the Windows XP Splash screen and when I click my username, it takes at least a minute more. After this the computer seems to work fine. To try and fix this I have tried the following:

- Deleted all temp files, etc
- Deleted all old restore files (free'd 8 GIG!)
- Ran CW Shredder, Hijack This and removed any spyware, etc.
- Ran Sophos, Panda Online, Housecall but no viruses have been detected
- Ran a disk defrag
- Ran a the disk cleanup utility

However none of these have improved the performance.

Any ideas??

Have you checked to see what all is in your start up. Could this rar file be touching your startup somehow?

Ive deleted the file from my computer, how would i check if its touching my startup???

try to find bootvis.exe on the internet. It is a microsoft utility that analyses where your boot time stays (e.g. driver, system etc.) and can also increase the performance of your XP station by cleaning up everything that has to do with booting and organising the files in the boot sector.

MS removed the tool from their site, but it is still out there.....

Go to "Run". Type in msconfig > OK. This will open a new window. Choose the tab that says "startup". This will tell you what is starting when you boot-up. See if there is any reference to the program in question. If so, just un-check the box and reboot. Don't uncheck anything you're not sure of, some of these are necessary to start Windows!

I tried the bootvis and it seemed to work fine. I rebooted and when I got to the login stage of XP clicked my username and it states 'logging on', it shows my background and then immediately logs off. I have tried to login with another userid setup and the same problem. I tried to open it in SafeMode and all the other options available after pressing F8 and still the same problem.

Any ideas??

that's a very strange thing. I've used bootvis several times on several XP machines with or without SP1 and never had any problems??!!

strangest is that even safe mode isn't working anymore. Even if your account is damaged, you should be albe te login using another account. (had that one time myself, but not caused by the bootvis utulity).

Do you have am emergency repairdisk? Otherwise try booting from CD and choose the repair option.

Try this:

boot normally and when you're on desktop, open task manager.
Look at processus who take most ram, and tell us.
(if you can make a print screen of your tasklist, it's better).

Maybe there a processus who start with windows but take much ram ?

To see what you have in "start up" you can use ace utilities (good!) or others apps like this.

Or go in your registry, BUT be extremely careful if you're not experienced.

Hi there,

go to the Device Manager, under Hardware, open up the settings for the IDE controller, deinstall it completely, reboot... have XP reinstall the IDE controller and your performance should be back to normal...

Reason: XP has a build in safety mechanism, that takes off when DMA calls (up to 5 times) fail, it switches the drives into PIO mode to ensure Data Transfer... the only solution is to deinstall the IDE controller and/or drives and have XP reinstall them...

my opinion is that this is more anoying than worth it, THANX MS....
