What the problem is, is that printers will slow down or stop. The problem started when I upgraded a system from 5.0.2 to 5.0.6 and moved to a dual xeon server with adaptec RAID. The printers set-up were just transferred by copying the appropriate printers and interface directories across to the new system. The printers that hang are serial the printers on parallel port slow down (i.e. 16ppm laser will print 1ppm.

I've changed 3com 905c network cards, looked for bottlenecks with sar. Check for enough STREAM's. Installed rs506a update.

I suspect the spooler system because I can "cat printfile > /dev/lp0" and the printer will work a dream.

Has anyone an answer, or where can I get a description of what resources the spooler system uses to see if it is a resource issue.

broken links/interfaces are problem...given that both parallel and serial are effected. would delete all printers and re-add. depending on how large your printer list is...this may take a while but worth it.

also check on /usr/spool/lp/logs.....i usually [> requests].

also, at time of slowdown check on /usr/spool/lp/temp. also do [uptime] and look at stats. also [showmem].
