To be fair, a mailbox pillar need not be attached to anything.

Additionally, they may have added the additional detail to convey that the pillar was strong enough to hold up a security gate

I believe they're going to remove "proofreader" from the dictionary next year. No one seems to employ them anymore.

I have a reference book (quite new). I has so many typos in it, I am wondering if anyone read it before it went to print.

Maybe typewriters should make a comeback, because they didn't have built spell-check and grammar correction (apparently in a different language to the one you are actually using)
