Sloooww Exchange

Having just set up a new client running NT4WS SP6a, i tryed to login to outlook 98.

It times out on the first effort but generally goes in on the second. Not a major problem i know but takes 6 mins to get in minimum.

Servers high spec running xchge5.5 sp3 and its a 10/100 lan.
Tryed different accounts, different patch leads, ports, time out settings, nic etc etc etc...any ideas?

Have you tried to ping the exchange server? we found out that it was taking too long for the server to be found, a problem simmilar to yours, but as soon as we put an entry in the hosts file the ping comes back immediately, and the Outlook logs in with no problem. Hope this helps.

tryed.... was quick at IP res.. not quick at netbios to IP.
Put an entry in the hosts file and it didnt speed up...
still find it odd that it never goes in 1st time, but without fail second (no matter how long u leave it inbetween)....

Are you running WINS or DNS on your network?

For Exchange to run smoothly, I always use BOTH incorporated into DHCP. It means practically no client setup...

Zelandakh's right. It could be an issue with host resolution. If you ping the server is it slow to respond??

Try adding a local entry in you lmhosts file for the name of the exchange server

open the file situated in winnt/system32/drivers/etc/lmhosts
using notepad.

add a line for the exchange server

eg ExchangeServer1 10.10.10.11


Save the file and from a cmd prompt reload the cache - nbtstat -R and give it another go!!

At least this will give you an idea what the problem is.

I thought the lmhosts file in etc was a .sam file and you need to create a new one with no extension. Or is that 9x?

I faffed around with that before discovering my problem - WINS and DNS are easier!!!

am running both DNS and WINS.

resolution is slow from host name to IP...

Both services seem ok and i added a line into the lmhosts, didnt make any diff with the speed (>< >10 & 1 ms)

have to say i didnt reload the cache... will give that a go... cheers all.,..and keep em comin!!

tryed the nbtstat

no names in cache... reloaded it still nuttin
the servers are listed when - r is used tho

erm......and I've always been used to having an lmhosts file present, as well as the sample, without having to create one. nbtstat -c will tell you what is loaded.

Using ipconfig/all will show the node. Hybrid will give an indication that the machine will perform netbios/lmhost lookups before DNS and WINS. This should allow you to add in local entries and have the assurance they will be resolved.

the command for nbtstat is nbtstat -R

Hey,

Goto Microsoft Knowledge Base and look up binding orders under Outlook. It requires some editing of the registry but it seems to work pretty well. We had a similar problem and it helped speed up the connection.

sorted it.... couldnt tell you why but if i put the entry's in the lmhosts file it is slower, if i remove them and put them into the hosts file it works perfectly... I thought hosts was for telnet/ftp apps and lmhosts was for nt4 networks (well, new Lan Manager anyways)??? pass.... cheers for the tips tho guys.
