Hello,

The sales guys are complaining about query speed, on MS Access. Database is running on dedicated server, programer tells me no changes in past week to query's.

I am seeing network utilization on the server at 40-55% when running a query. Query's taking 3-4 minutes instead of 60-90 seconds.

Sales guys complained a few days ago about a different slowdown, but still query related.

I did add a switch last night, spreading users across additonal switches, and gave the servers, printers and links to other switches a switch of there own.

Because of previous slowness I checked all switch ports and ensured they were fixed full and 100.

Diskeeper runs each night, but I did find significant fragmentation two hours ago, and ran a defrag again. Just anaylsed the disk partition, and do not see significant fragmentation at this time.

I would really appreciate any suggestions or ideas on the situation. It feels like the network is seeing a huge increase in traffic, all aimed at the database server.

Thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, so much in advance for any hints, ideas, suggestions or solutions.

Jeff

Below is what I see on the server core switch. 0/4 is a link from another switch, and 0/22 is the database server.

I don't see anything running very heavy on the switch which leaves the app . Even if the switch was even somewhat busy it wouldn't cause a 3 minute delay in response , sounds like a app issue to me . None of the interfaces are busy on the 2900 .

You hard-coded all the interfaces to 100/Full - did you hard-code all the servers and workstations as well? If you didn't you will have loads of duplex mis-matches.

Andy

txload 2/255, rxload 67/255
on fa0/22, your database switchport. This is about .7% transmit load and 26% receive load. That's not much at all.

Burt

Vipergg, thanks for your eval. Programer promises me he didn't change the query, but... Will have futher chats with the programmer.

ADB100, I hard-coded the switches, and links to other switches, as well as the servers. Didn't hard-code the workstations. I don't see any duplex mis-matches, or other errors. Good point, something that's easy to do.

Thanks,

Jeff

You won't see any errors on the switch if it's hard-coded to Full-Duplex as the collision detection circuitry is disabled in full-dupex mode, however on the workstations you are likely to be getting lots....... I wouldn't recommend hard-coding anything except inter-switch links or links to routers and to be honest even then I would probably just leave them at auto. I have seen that many issues with hard-coding NICs and switchports that simply disappear when you revert them back to auto. I have seen drivers that allow you to hard-code Full-Duplex but in reality it didn't work and the NIC always operated in Auto mode resulting in a duplex mis-match that is almost impossible to detect.
Duplex negotiation used to be a problem when Fast Ethernet first appeared but that was a LONG time ago now. Any NIC manufactured in the last 5 years should be left at auto IMO.

Andy

Burtsbees,

So everybody is agreeing it's not a load on the network, I don't see any errors indicating errors, other servers/apps are running fine...

Sometimes I see the server in question showing network utilization that's over 85% (spiky), and I wonder why.

I did notice a few people who after rebooting didn't have a link in time for scripts to run. Will have to enable portfast on the PC's. Can't imagine how that would affect speed.

Thanks for looking at my situation.

Jeff

ADB100,

Learn something new every day. I thought best pratice was to hard code the link between switches and servers. I had problems with auto-negotiation (duplex mismatch) between the 2900XL and a few servers. I hard-coded to elimante the problem, perhaps I created a monster instead.

I have hard coded many server NIC's previously, but hard coding the switch links is very recent. Sounds like you have given me some important items to check.

Thanks, thanks, thanks,

Jeff

ADB100,

Changed the problem switch and linked switch back to auto-config and the problem seems to have disappeared. Thanks! I will feel much better tomorrow after the sales dept. is quiet for a few hours!

It's hard to belive, I thought it was best to hard code and I seem to recall problems with auto-config in the past. And I still need to change a few other switches back to auto-config.

I really wish there was a how to do it, that had all the answers. Guess I am reaching for the stars, and if it was that easy, everybody would be experts.

Thanks for taking the time to voice your opinion, explain the situation and help me out!

Thanks,

Jeff

According to your original post, it's clear that you have a duplex mismatch on f0/1 and f0/4. Never hard set your speed and duplex. Make sure both ends of every link is set to AUTO. Manually configuring your speed and duplex has not been best practice for years but many people still do it mistakenly thinking that it is solving a problem or avoiding a problem when, in fact, it is causing problems.

Between cisco devices these days "auto" works fine and for "most" cleints but there will still be the rare occasion where something does not want to cooperate. How to's on best practices is all available at cisco.com and most of it is free . They vast amounts of documention on the site . Great reading for when you can't sleep at night , it will put you to sleep in 15 minutes guaranteed . :)

jneilberger & vipergg - we keep telling people but they don't want to listen.....

I managed to stop a reasonably big Nortel IP Telephony solution being thrown out a few weeks ago by fixing some duplex issues. The network/server guys were adamant that the ports had to be hard-coded because they have had issues in the past; I changed the ports the Call Servers & Voice Gateways were connected to back to auto and all the telephony issues mysteriously disappeared. - I subsequently got my ass kicked for making some changes but that's another (political) story....

It seems it's usually server people that have the idea that all server NIC's MUST be hard-coded or there will be problems. I don't know why though \

Andy

Not ALL server guys...I'm a server guy, and I don't hard code NICs...

Burt

'Usually'....)

Probably much less experienced server guys than you though, obviously.

Andy

The only devices I regularly saw issues with were Solaris servers a few years ago. They really didn't like to negotiate properly for some reason. And I'll still run across a device once in a while that behaves strangely. It just happened yesterday actually. However, I can honestly say that 99% or more of the devices I deal with have no problems negotiating properly.
