Hi there! I am runnin Windows2000 advanced Server (candidate 3) on a 600Mhz Dell Precision 210. Everything is running fine, except when I try to connect to another computer on our network. I am connecting through our server, which is running Windows NT4SP5 on a dual 500MHZ processor. Whenever I go to look at ANYTHING on our network, I will click on it, and then have to wait... and wait... and wait... and finally get to the file/computer. Then if I have to go into subdirectory, the waiting begins again. What could cause this?
John Vogel
john@computerwiz.net
<a href=If you are interested in working on a very worthwhile Christian web project, please email me at
Have you checked DNS or wins config?
maybe it's waiting for a dns request?
There is a file in win98 called hosts and lmhosts if you put your servers ip address in these files it might help. Not used win2000 so I am not to sure on these files though.
Lmhosts is for nt computers
hosts for other win9X computers, but I would stick the ip address in both files to make sure!

I think the format is something like this

<IP-address> <netmask> <name of computer/server>

without the brackets though, the file does say how to do it.
Simon Jones
sijones@talk21.com
<a href= Allandale Youth Works
The above is all my own site I look after!!!
God am good!!! and good lookin :)

Thanks for the response, Simon. Unfortunately changing the hosts/lmhosts had no effect on the speed. Nice try though :)
Any other suggestions?
This might be related either to your DNS, or GateWay

Make sure that your GateWay and DNS is correct and if multiple DNS servers the most important one is at the top.

From the command prompt type Route /print and compare the output with the one from a working machine.

Also examine the NetStat.exe and IPConfig.exe (run both from the command prompt)
When I did a netstat, I noticed the following:
TIME_WAIT
TCP JOHN:37XX pop3.email.msn.com.:pop3

several times repeated. What does this mean? I did not have my email program running. What would cause this?
John Vogel
john@computerwiz.net
<a href=If you are interested in working on a very worthwhile Christian web project, please email me at
what kind of network connection do you have? 10/100? What protocols do you have running on both machines? Have you tried connecting to the W2K machine from another node on your network to see if that side of the network is slow?

Thanks, I fixed this problem. It was the directory server that was causing the bottleneck. I just killed it, and it wors fine. I really just had too many network programs runnning, and once I killed the main directory server, and killed some test programs I had forgotten about, it ran much smoother.
John Vogel
johnvogel@homepage.com
<a href= HomePage
WebMaster - DataBase Administrator - Programmer
