slave drive not recognized

I have an Aptiva which suddenly dies. I finally figured out that the hard drive seems to have some sort of mechanical proble. I installe and new drive and the systemis up and running. The problem, of course, is that i want some of the data on the old drive. I was hoping that if i hooked it up as a slave I could get to the data (when scandisk still worked on the old drive, I could tell that it is only a certain address range that had a problem). I jumpered it as a slave but the system does not even 'see' it. Auto detect is on. I also had that problem when I had it as the only drive and it was jumpered master. Am I doing something wrong? Is there any other way to get the data Ii want off the old drive?

If the BIOS no longer sees it, it is most likely toast.There are third party companies that will be able to extract the files, but at a heavy price.

Well,,,,, the jumper on the MASTER HD is probably not set right.

I recommend,,,, putting that old HD in the CD-ROM slot,
temporarily, to isolate it, and see if it really being seen.

CHECK THE BIOS: Make sure it is on AUTO
Turn off your PC
Unhook the CD-ROM and hook the HD up to that ribbon cable
BOOT up........ see if it is being seen

It eliminates hassles,,,,,,, and makes the data transfer MUCH faster

I took the advice here and hooked the old HD to the CD drive cable and the BIOS sees it now. It shows as a slave on the secondary IDE channel but I don't care as I can access it and get my data off! Thank you, thank you. I fiddled around with the jumpers but still couldn't get it to change status. The new HD is jumpered correctly as master though as I checked with their tech support and there is also a picture on the top of the drive. Who knows - I'm just glad I can get my data - and I have the zip drive ready to go so I don't have this problem again in the future.
