SLAMMER and CE 8.5 - updating MSDE

MSDE is the default DB engine used when SQL is not installed on the CE server. SO...this obviously needs to be updated to protect against SLAMMER.

Microsoft documentation states that "...any instances of MSDE installed by a 3rd party application must be upgraded with a service pack provided by the application vendor..."

Do we need a patch from Crystal? Has anyone successfully updated MSDE using the standard MS patch?

I've updated MSDE using the MS patch and it did not go smoothly, since I had no password on the database (didn't need one in this particular case!).

If this applies to you, run setup from the cmd line and use the BLANKSAPWD=1 switch, which overrides the installer's default behaviour which is to deny installation to admins with no password...

After I installed SP4, the APS would not start. Found this article at Crystal Decisions.
