When I run a back up sometimes I get an error message that there is an exception. The exception is that it is unable to open a file named winstmp.mdb.

Why is this file being skipped??.....I am using a daily update and some days this file is skipped and other days it is not. Any thoughts??

Windows 2003 server and Veritas version 9.1

Thanks.

Could the file possibly be open during some of the nights when the backup run?
It may be worth checking the Open Files in Computer Management before thre backup runs to see if it's open.
Just a suggestion.

If you don't have Open File Option - it will not backup open files...

I was told (but i'm not sure) that pre-9.1 versions included the Open File option - and if you recently updated to 9.1 - that feature is not longer included and requires a new license.

I know that i needed to buy it seperate from the core product when i upgraded to version 10d.

From Microsoft.....

When you configure WINS on a cluster server, the database files are separated from the Winstmp.mdb files. This behavior is different from a single-server environment that runs WINS. On a cluster server, the WINS database and the related files reside on a cluster storage device in the path that is specified for the WINS resource. However, the Winstmp.mdb file still resides in the %SystemRoot%\System32\WINS folder on the local hard disk.

Do not move or rename the Winstmp.mdb file. The Winstmp.mdb file is only used for reindexing the WINS database; it is not used for database recovery and should not be backed up. If you attempt to back up this file, you may receive an error message that states that the file is open or that there is a sharing violation. These errors are benign and can be ignored.
