A strange question, maybe, but ...

I have an old Danish XP CD & license that I want to use for the first time.

Unfortunately it is from before all those 'Surface Pack' issues ever started.

Can I jump directly to install SP2, or do I have to install SP1 first ?

And where do I find a Danish languaged SP1 these days ?
The few links found so far all end up with files in English.
(At least by name)

And NO! I do not want to go into Vista!
I have way too many applications that do not run at all on that 'flatform'.

I don't know about the Danish part, but you can go straight to SP2 on a US version of XP. You cannot go straight to SP3.

Actually according to the Requirements set by Microsoft you can go from no service pack straight to Service Pack 3.

Just choose the language option from the drop down, and change it to Danish.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

That was not my experience. I recently had to install windows XP Professional on a new computer. I downloaded SP3 from microsoft and it would not let me install it until at least SP1 was loaded.

Well that's what Microsoft states in their Requirements:
Microsoft said:
System Requirements

* Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP; [red]Windows XP Home Edition[/red] ; Windows XP Home Edition N; Windows XP Media Center Edition; [red]Windows XP Professional Edition[/red] ; Windows XP Professional N; [green]Windows XP Service Pack 1[/green]; [green]Windows XP Service Pack 2[/green]; Windows XP Starter Edition; Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

[red]Windows Xp Home/Professional Edition[/red]

Since they go on to later Specify service pack levels, I take that to mean that you can install onto a "servicepackless" (that is so a word ;)) Win XP Pro edition.

However if you say that you needed it I believe you. Still I would try it before totally discarding the option.

Excellent !
Looks like you and my Danish network (!) just saved me about 4,500 miles worth of gas. (Doing 100 mpg easy on a 4 stroke 50 ccm engine scooter (-: )

With the gas prices here in Denmark, of course, it will only amount to about 2.000 miles.

For want of a pun they saved your (Danish) bacon.

I too had to install SP1 before going to SP3 using a non-SP original CD.

Well, my Dansih network has come up with a university page having loads of SPs for many applications and Win versions. Danish and English.

Might be useful for some in here as well. The page is written in Danish, but should be interpretable even so.
I had to use IE to get the downloads going. In Firefox nothing simply happened :-(

Yes you can go from regular Xp to XpSp2 or if you feel the need, you can jump to Sp3..

here is a link to download Sp2:

I hope this is useful!(i had to do the same thing)[wink]

I just went through the install with very few problems. After the original deal, I directly started the SP2, that worked without any problems.

The only real issue was at the very beginning, as the original Win XP for some reason did not support discs larger than 128 GB.
That was the largest disc/partition I could get, and the remaining 110 GB could only be accessed/partitioned/formated after SP2 was installed.

I can live with that. The old PC had 4 logical drives spanning 2 physical discs, so this is a little step forward :)

True in my case also, with a US/English pre-SP1 CD. SP1 must be installed first, but then SP2 cab be skipped altogether.

BTW this is the best way to integrate SP3, at system setup, not a single conflict w/ any of the dozen or so machines I assembled and loaded in this fashion. I bought several copies of XP w/ SP1 (cheaper than SP2 or SP3 versions) and the PCs all work great, no possible conflicts as with installing SP3 on an older, in-use machine.

If I'm not too mistaken, doesn't SP2 roll all previous updates into the the SP, along with the new SP itself?

A simple service pack chart...
XP = Original release
sp1 = sp1
sp2 = sp1 + sp2
sp3 = sp1 + sp2 + sp3

I've always installed SP2 before SP3 to play it safe. But then again, when M$ first issued service packs, they would mail you at no cost (yes free ... imagine that) a CD. I have them for SP1 & 2. And vacunita, you must be a wiz at scrabble. {;›) I checked my encyclopedia but couldn't find 'servicepackless'. It is a bit outdated however. [ponder]
