Hello all, the bird is back and has another question...

I was hoping that there was some way, (other than calling a separate movie) that I can automatically skip to the end of a movie the 2nd time it is visited...

In other words, the user goes to my site, gets a cool flash intro that ends up as a homepage/navigation point.

The user selects a page to go to that takes him (or her no sexism here but the users name is john so we can assume it is a him from now on) to another separate HTML page.

John then decides to hit the 'back' button and go back to the home page... but instead of the home page flash movie starting over at frame 1 it automatically goes to the end of the movie, and all of the nav buttons.

Ok, get the pic?... is this possible, and please be kind I have only got Flash 4...

(this only needs to happen per visit, not for subsequent viewings)

Thanks! :-V

Hi Big!

I might be wrong... But I think the only way this could possibly work (and not even sure it would work with Flash 4!), is if you could access John's (or Jean's I guess!) history folder to see if he or her just recently visited the site. Through javascript you could then redirect the movie to goto your navigation frame rather than going through the intro again. Maybe this could also be done through the use of a cookie, but then the user would have had to allow them!
In any case, don't think it can be directly done in Flash, outside of resorting to a javascript function that would do the above... And I wouldn't know where to start on this.
Guess it's more a question for the Javascript forum... Do you want me to ask the question there for you since I seem to understand what you're trying to achieve?

thx old - appreciate the quick response... I'd love ya to chase it up for me if you can, JS is still a bit foreign to me... Probably should take some time out to learn it, just after creating my time slowing device I guess... can you do THAT in Flash???? s-) LOL :-Q

I believe there is a tutorial somewhere at flashkit.com that deals with that issue...look around, I know I've seen the tutorial...

And it was done by using a cookie which flash read off the users machine...this cookie COULD be set to expire if the browser closed...look for 'Flash Tutorials' on any popular search engine, and you should find it. Regards,

Big,
I've posted on the Java Forum, but until now the only answer seems to be to use cookies. Yes, Luke I did mention it in my first post... Before you!
Big have a look at this:
...And to especially the "Intro Once" stuff!
They do have a Flash cookie writer-reader on that page... You can check out the page's source code to see how it works.
I'm sure there's even a tutorial somewhere or at least a link to one! Just too lazy (as Luke is!) to look for it!

Have a nice day!

Yes, but I'm merely confirmation that there was a tutorial out there that used cookies and not javascript or any other way...

Oh, and I believe the site that has the tutorial/fla/whatever, is flashfever.com should be there somewhere...and thanks old for being such a great mod and setting me straight, you wouldn't want me trying to help anyone now would you?! That's a big NO NO I am guessing, since you keep trying to thwart any attempt I make at helping anyone!!!!!!!!!! Regards,

Ok then... The bird is a bit lost....

I have read the tutorial at and I think I get the JS side of things, what I am not sure about is the passing of the cookie info to a flash movie and having it read it, and pass one back I downloaded their example but could not make much sense of it... any ideas?...

I assume when the user goes to the site the initial cookie value would be 0 but that at the end of the flash movie a value of 1 would be passed back, then the html of the page would read the cookie on the second visit and see that there was a 1 value and send the user to an alternative home page... well thats what I want to do anyway... am I on the right track here?????

Please help meeeee -

Nooooooo.......

I don't know what I need to put into the flash movie (and Where) to make it write to the cookie (or pass info to the JS to write to the cookie or whatever)...

Have you got any idea (working on the tutorial mentioned above)...?

Helloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo............echo echo echo echo......

Ok! Started workin' on it... But then realized I was doing it in Flash 5. Will continue sometime this week! Busy day tomorrow! Only two lines of code really to adapt it to Flash 4, so it shouldn't be a problem... But I've said that before!
Catch you later!
