Would it be wise to skip Excahnge2000 and go straight to Exchange2003 from 5.5? We are presently flattening our network and have run out of space on our Exchange 5.5 server. So we need to upgrade all. Can you go from 5.5 to 2003 and what would be the best way to do this? Migrate all to 2003 then to a new Domain or migrate the server as 5.5 then upgrade to 2003?
Thanks

Hi

It isnt possible to go directly to exchange 2003 however it is bossible to import the users into 2003. My advice also is to skip exchange 2000, the features available in the latest version are far better, the most notable one being the web interface which in my opinion is excellent. I use this more than i use the outlook client and have been running it since beta 1 of exchange 2003.

Please feel free to take a look at my server..

goto click on outlook web access and say yes to the certificate security warning (i cant affored to purchase a certificate from online authorities) and log in using

Username : affy\demo
Password : demoacc

I will leave this acailable for today and tomorrow at which time i will change the password

Hope this helps

Dave :)

Thanks Dave. Much nicer then the OWA we have with 5.5. I also read of issues with EX2000 if your going to 2003 server in your network.
Thanks again
Fred

Very nice stuff affy. At my workplace we decided on going to Windows2000/Exchange2000 because Exchange 2003 is not out yet and is in beta (and we only have the summer to decide). I like the Exchange 2000 OWA but it looks like the Exchange 2003 OWA is much improved. We plan on going to Windows2003/Exchange2003 next year. Look forward to the new features.

Hi

Exchange in in the release candidate stage now and it extreemly stable, should be out in the next couple of months and am really looking forward to seeing itwhen it is fully released

affy thanks a lot for that view. i'm amazed and humbled. i'm also at 5.5, and this puts the 5.5 owa to shame. now i need to determine licensing costs to go to 2003.

Hello to all,

I have allready tried setting up a lab test environment to check the move of mailboxes and the directory synchronization from exchange 5.5 to the new 2003.
Frankly i had to use a different domain so I had to make some additional steps to get the right accounts in the active directory database, but it worked very well after getting the right accounts and their mappings (for more info mail me).
Now the hot topic is that Exchange 2003 is far better than 5.5 and 2000 versions, better management, same interface as 2000 and very reliable though.
Also the active directory connector has a thorough and step based guide which walks you to the correct procedure for the syncing of 5.5 with 2003.
About OWA now, it seems the same as Outlook 2003 !!! So much that you cannot distinguish it from the client ! Right clicks also work as the clients !
I strongly recommend anyone who is thinking to transition to 2000 to go for 2003, it's far better and reliable.
I have a bunch of information about setting up a test lab to check if 5.5 will work ok with the mailbox movement to 2003 under a different domain (quite a success though because I had to set up an exchange 5.5 and restore the data of my production's exchange on it, then create the user accounts in the domain -350 accounts approx- which was made with an export from the production's 5.5 directory list and then import them in the exchange 5.5.
I am planning of writing a full report about that but i have not locked time for this for the momment.

Kind Regards to all,
