I have read with interest all the discussions on SK98 in Windows 7. I have gone thru the compatibility grind and defined it as a windows 95 program, etc. In my case, when I run SK98, it asks me for my password. After entering the password the program freezes. Then after anything from 20 minutes to 5 hours it will all of a sudden load and be available for use! Then while I am working in the memo , it will suddenly close with an error message.
I think it is something that Microsoft is aware of but is not bringing the issue forward with a solution. One of their technical writers even posted something but was not useful.
Thanks,

Dear gs5,

If you wish to get rid of the password which is unneccesary as anyone with a modicum of computer knowledge can get by it anyway, then follow the instructions in the FAQ pages here.

Faq807-2286

The only caveat being that I have never used this hack on a Windows 7 machine but as long as regedit is there then it is possible.

Once you have got rid of the password issue we can see any other problems more clearly and solve them.

Dear gs5
Could you possibly go through the 'compatibility option' grind here, as I was uncertain that the option was available.
I had initially thought that all Windows 7 versions had that option and then I discovered on the Microsoft website that only the professional versions were supposed to have it, not Home Premium. How did you do it in your instance?
I would really appreciate it if you would possibly explain.
Thanks

Dear James33,
Sorry for the long silence, but I did not know that you had posted a question. Firstly, I do not think the password is an issue. The fact that sidekick requests the password shows that the program does load and executes correctly. Also, I get the same problem without the password.
Regarding your question on compatibility: Yes, I do have Windows 7 home premium version. To get the compatibilty test, I rightclick on the Sidekick icon , select properties , then click on Compatibility tab , I can define the program as windows 95, etc.
Another interesting aspect is that when sidekick is loaded and I highlight some text , wanting to copy it , Windows suddenly comes up with a message that an illegal operation was performed and aborts sidekick ! This does not happen with sidekick on Windows NT or XP which I have on my other computers. The text being highlighted is standard Ariel or 'Courier new' font.
Thanks!

Dear Gs5

To get notified if someone posts back in a thread Tek-Tips has changed things from the default option where you always were notified if you had posted in a thread, to a situation where I believe that you have to click on the option "Notify Me" above the text box you use to reply to a post.

You know you have done it when you check on the right hand side where you can also turn on or off notification as below.

Notify Me

E-mail notification ON. Click to turn off.

Thanks for coming back on this issue and I would appreciate if you could let me know if this text selection problem occurs in all the views; as in Write, Cardfile and Calendar!

Dear All
I stand corrected and I apologise for any confusion the quote following this statement spells out the current situation:

The default for post notification has not changed. It is defaulted to “on” for the member starting a thread (asking the question), and defaulted to “off” for anyone replying. The interface has been updated, but the routines have not changed.

Dear james33,
The error always occurs on the "Memo" view as I use that most often .
My memo file contains stuff I copy from the web including web links.
I will test the highlighting more often on the "Contacts" , "Calendar" & "Expenses" views to see if it occurs there as well.
I have set the email notification to ON now.
Thanks!

The exact error message is :
"Windows is checking for a solution to the problem..."
This happens with Contacts card file as well, but not the log file. I have yet to see it happen on the calendar. The error only occurs when I rightclick the mouse after highlighting some text.
Thanks,

The exact error message is:
Sidekick 98 has stopped working.
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem.
