I was given a new Laptop and I am trying to configure Winspm Rel 9 in the site settings but every port I used came up with an error.Yesterday was spent with Radio Shack trying to find a driver for the USB-Serial Cable. Today was getting told by IBM they could not help me (?) Has anyone have similar issues?

I have used a USB to SERIAL Adapter with great success on my DELL Desktop.

The one I use is a USB-SERIAL CH340, Windows 7 seemed to find the drivers just fine.

But, it's a pain in the neck that all these "IMPROVEMENTS" cause us so many headaches.

Usually, after a power hit, I have to go back in and tell it AGAIN what serial port it is.

Thank you Merlin man but what port do you tell the Winspm when establishing a new direct connect? in the site settings sect.?

GThank com one did noyt take last time I tried my co worker has his set to com 6 I' on my way on site to a client aI will plug it in and see if that works *Crossed Fingers*

did you look in the device manager in windows to see what it has assign as the comm port for the USB device

That's where you have to do it. I even get a message like; "The port is already in use....", but if you know it's not really being used (and is disabled in BIOS) then you can go ahead and set it for com 1.
