1. Slow loading (probably due to 100k of images on a fairly plain page!)
2. No doctype
3. No Title
4. Doesn't validate.
5. Contact Us page gives a 404 when submitted
6. Two of your three Clients:Website links only get a 'Coming Soon'

I sure wouldn't buy a web design service that can't produce a site that doesn't even start to validate!

Hi

I like that fireish top image. And generally I like the design.

Provide alt text only for the images with meaningfull content, otherwise for example your menu will look like this without images :
index.cfm without images said:
Left Nav [blue]Home[/blue] Seperator [blue]Clients[/blue] Seperator [blue]Projects[/blue] Seperator [blue]FAQs[/blue] Seperator [blue]Contact Us[/blue] Seperator
The images of the client categories are abit too big for my taste. I do not like to scroll the page to see only four links...

The most important would be to correct the http://www.imajinarts.com/]markup errors[/url]. Are too many for one who offers web development services.

Which image is 100K? The highest image size is 29K

2. No doctype
added, it was an oversight

3. No Title
added, it was an oversight

4. Doesn't validate.
what doesn't validate? The contact us form? If so, it does, its server-side validation

5. Contact Us page gives a 404 when submitted
Has to be you. Many ppl have test submitted the form without an issue.

6. Two of your three Clients:Website links only get a 'Coming Soon'
Again has to be you. Three of the clients section displays "Sorry, no clients in this category yet.
Be the first client added to this category. Contact us today and see what we can do for you!" - which is NOT the same as 'Coming Soon'. The only place where you see 'Coming Soon' is the Projects sections. And that has nothing to do with clients

I sure wouldn't buy a web design service that can't produce a site that doesn't even start to validate!
Which is fine with me.

Might also want to verify the text and grammer in the pages. On the home page for example, you say:

imajinarts.com said:
Located in NYC, Imajin Arts is more then just another web development firm. We specialize in a variety of services. See below for a full list of all services. But Imajin Arts doesn't stop at web development, we also specialize in personal and business networks.

I might be nit-picking here, but it sounds like you're trying to write text at mixed reading levels by using larger words, but very simple sentences. Might not be a bad idea to go through the text and tidy it up a bit. Also, the text in red is incorrect, should be than.

You have lists of items on several pages that you offer services for, but these aren't in a standard unordered list tag. Instead, you're using just standard text and line breaks to note these.

It also appears that your ColdFusion app is sending the page out in UTF-8 format, even though you have a Meta tag set to iso-8859-1. You'll want to either remove the meta tag and just use UTF-8 or change the server config to send it out in ISO-8859-1.

Finally, I see that in your structure, you're hardcoding widths for the different elements in the page. The page width is currently 800 pixels, which won't work without horizontal scrolling for approximately 20% of net users today (Information as of January 2006, w3schools). At the company I work for, the number is actually higher, ranking in at 32% for July of 2006, based on our web trending data compiled.

Hope this helps!

feherke, thanks for the feedback. Well, i'd prefer leaving the alt tags on ALL images, even non-essential images like "seperator". Having alt tags on images is always a good practice. I will, however, add more descriptive text to the links.

Hmmm, I can't shrink the image anymore without having eveything all squished together. But I see your point. I can however, rearrange the image placement.

Thanks!

To help answer the questions that just came in:

1) Image size - this wasn't referring to one image, but all of them on a given page. For example, the home page has the following statistics when loaded:

Document Size - Documents (1 file) 7 kb
7 kb
Images (22 files) 98 kb
37 kb
30 kb
8 kb
4 kb
3 kb
2 kb
2 kb
1 kb
1 kb
1 kb
1 kb
1 kb
855 bytes
820 bytes
784 bytes
718 bytes
523 bytes
472 bytes
452 bytes
451 bytes
451 bytes
394 bytes
Style Sheets (1 file) 2 kb
2 kb
Scripts (0 files)
Total 107 kb

For a dial-up user running at 56K wanting web development services, this page would take approximately 14 seconds to download. Not very speedy.

2) Validation - This wasn't talking about the contact us form validating form fields, but having the HTML, CSS and Javascript validate to standards. You can go to the W3C validator and run your page against it to see what is currently not valid based on your doctype.

Hope this helps!

- George

Rieekan, thanks for catching "then" vs "than".

I decied go with the list of services as standard text denoted break tags instead of using the ordered list tags. No real reason, I like the look of this style better.

I don't know why the CF pages are being sent as UTF-8. That's odd, I'll look into that.

1. I see you've now removed the redundant image, but
Speed report
still shows 55K of images

2/3/4. Now you've put a Doctype and a title you're down to 3 errors:

5. My apologies - it must be the validation script you use that gives a 404. With a contact name of 's' and a email of 's@s.s' and some text in the comments, it's consistently giving me a 404

5. shows these 2 links:
both of which display:
'Coming Soon' on an otherwise blank page.

Sorry, seems that I was not clear enough. I meant to just not put alt text, not to remove the [tt]alt[/tt] attribute.
Code:
[gray]<!-- I suggested this : -->[/gray]
<img src="images/index_07.jpg" width="26" height="41" alt="">

[gray]<!-- [b]not[/b] this : -->[/gray]
<img src="images/index_07.jpg" width="26" height="41">
Now please imagine a blind man navigating your site, and listening to your menu : "... Seperator Clients Seperator Projects Seperator ...". More boring would be only using a more descriptive alt value like : "... White double-colon seperator on orange degrade background Clients White double-colon seperator on orange degrade background Projects White double-colon seperator on orange degrade background ...". I hope now is more clear my point.

Feherke.

johnwm,

1. I don't know what to say. I guess I can recreate the images in PS and see it'll shrink it lower.

2/3/4. Yeah, I looked at the validator link and saw those three errors. There is NO reason for that come up. That P-tag is closed, do a view source to see. The tag placement is: <p><h5 class="headerName">ABOUT IMAJIN ARTS</h5></p>

5. What enties did you enter in the form to get an error? Like email, comment, name, etc? I'll see if I can mock that error. Cause as it stands, you're the only one that says it throws an error.

As for the 'coming soon' issue, take a look at these images. This is how it looks for everyone else.
(this is completely different then clients)

What browser/OS are you using?

I checked this in FF and IE.

Rieekan , do you know if by default the hosting compnay can changet he doctype of your pages? Because I am specifically calling my doctype as "iso-8859-1" why is validator retreiving it is "UTF-8"?

No. It's only good where the alt attribute provides a meaningful alternative to the image. Think of it like this: if you were reading your page out down the phone, would you say "Left Nav Back to Homepage Seperator Back to Clients Seperator Back to Projects Seperator Back to FAQs Seperator Back to Contact Us Seperator"? Cos that's what a screen reader will do for a blind person, and also what Google will do when trying to make sense of your site.

So, where you have an image of a piece of text, the [tt]alt[/tt] attribute should simply be whatever the text says. If it's simply a piece of eye candy, [tt]alt=""[/tt] tells screen readers not to worry about it. If you want a tooltip to give a little extra help, use the [tt]title[/tt] attribute.

I like the look of this style better
The look of things is what CSS is for. If you want to make your unordered lists look like a set of paragraphs, you can switch off the bullets and the indenting accordingly. They're still lists and should be marked up as such in the HTML.

I'm leaving the unnecessary tags as alt=""

feherke, I reordered the images on the clients section, is that better?

Why are you so quick to dismiss comments like this? johnwm is a potential customer for you as is everyone else who reads this thread or visits your website. There's not much point asking for advice if you are going to ignore the helpful answers.

As for comments on the actual site, I'd say:

1) It's semantically incorrect in lots of places. There are tables everywhere, inline attributes dictating their styles and (as said previously) it doesn't validate. If you want to come across as a professional web development agency, I'd say that these things were vital, as personally, if I was looking for someone to design my ite, this would instantly put me off.

2) Why is there nothing in the projects section? You'd be better off not including it rather than have an empty section as it looks as it gives off a message that you are struggling for work.

3) The date at the top of the page doesn't cope very well when the text size is increased (it dissappears behind the image). Is it even needed though as it doesn't really serve any purpose?

4) The front page scrolls horizontally for me yet only reveals a footer. Is ther any space you could save so it all fits on one page?

Apart from that, it's quite easy to navigate and well laid out.

ca8msm, I wasn't dismissing comments like that, I was put off by the manner in which he came out. Others have given feedback as well, and they all posted in a professional manner.

I have been on tek-tips for a while, and all my posts have been professional. No matter what I may think of the individual, their work or opinions I don't leave posts that come off rude.

With that said done, your suggestions:
1. The only part that doesn't validate is about a P-tag not being closed, yet it is. In view-source you can see the tag properlly closed. The tag placement is: <p><h5 class="headerName">ABOUT IMAJIN ARTS</h5></p> But the validator insists that the P-tag is not closed.

2. The project section has nothing to do with the cleints section. Perhaps I should rename the projects link to portfolio. The reason it's empty is I have to clean up some old projects and re-test them before I upload them. Perhaps it would be a better idea if I posted what "projects" section is meant for and why it's 'coming soon'

3. If by "text at the top" you mean the time/date stamp, it's not necessary. I just don't want to leave it blank. But I did lower the text size and got rid of the part that says "today is" - that part is not needed.

4.
The front page scrolls horizontally for me yet only reveals a footer. Is ther any space you could save so it all fits on one page?
You mean the front page scrolls veritcally, right? What screen size are you using where the scroller appears?

That's becuase <p> and <h> are both block level tags. You shouldn't include one within the other.

I fill out the form and leave out 1 required field, ALL the fields go blank. Don't make me re-enter the stuff i did put in.

view source
Code:
Comming soon!
That's the only one i looked at.
IE6 and FF both.

nothing tells me without having to read a little bit what you're offering. your banner doesn't scream web development / general IT services. nice image, but it doesn't tell me anything, other than to "just imagine" looks more like a blog at first glance.
