SITE CONNECTION RPC OR IP???

I have two sites within the same domain infrastructure with one forrest. One site in the SF office has a DC that connects to another DC in the LA office. The connection type by default is "RPC", shouldn't the connection be via IP?

Could I change from RPC to IP? Is it better?
