Hi all,

Has anybody used a Sip trunk to network with a free phone system such as Asterisk?

I'd like to connect my BCM via an IP trunk to an Asterisk system and if possible map several DDI/DID numbers from the PRI on the BCM through to extensions on the other system.

If anyone has any comments on this idea I'd appreciate them!

Thanks,
Ricky

You'll need to be on release 4.0 for the BCM SIP trunks to interoperate with anything other than another BCM. That being said, I've never interfaced a BCM to anything other than a Nortel product via SIP, but since SIP is open standard you should be able to get it to talk to an Asterisk system.

Hi, Thanks for the reply biv343.

Assuming that the sip IP trunk will work between the BCM running 4.0 and Asterisk, is my comment regarding passing DDI/DID numbsers through to an Asterisk extension a workable idea? I assume if two BCM's are connected via an IP trunk this would be possible?

I tried to ask the telecoms engineer from my provider (BT) but he was not sure if it was possible.

Thanks,
Rick

Yes. You would bring the DID into the BCM, and route the appropriate DNIS digits over the SIP trunks to the Asterisk. No real big deal.

I have set up a link between the new AsteriskNow application and a BCM 200 on 3.7. I am using the Meet me conference facility on the Asterisk box because Nortel have not released any thing as yet.

mrmarshall, can you provide any more information as to how you linked the two using a 3.7 BCM? Thanks!

biv343, thanks for the confirmation, I am not very experienced at handling phone systems, could you point me in the right direction as to how I'd configure the number routing? Thanks again!

Cheers,
Rick

Hi LBT001,

What version of Asterisk are you using?

I installed the BETA version of the Asterisk NOW with the GUI interface because I do not have the time to try and learn another system what with the BCM and Meridian systems. But I do like to play.

The Asterisk now has a GUI and allows for easy routing similar to the BCM's call routing. As for the config for both boxes. I set up a leading digit under the H323 trunks in the BCM and set the system type to other. The asterisk was very similar I set it up telling it to use SIP but it connected and is working fine. I do see the Asterisk complaining from time to time but does work.

Not using any at the moment, I was checking the feasibility before purchasing the Voip trunk keycodes for the BCM.

I like the look of Asterisk NOW, I'm downloading it at the min :)

So your setup connects using H.323? I read on another site that somebody else has done this, although they had problems with CLID from the BCM to Asterisk. Will let you know how I get on!

Thanks for the help.

Cheers,
Rick

Can someone tell me how to find extensions on a BCM 400, all the wiring comes out of the media module and feeds into the network wiring box we have 26 telephones connected and we have at least 10 ports not connected, I've checked the configuration of the media module and its 2/6 Double Density for 32. When i connect to the ports they are dead. I never had this problem with our Norstar Compact plus. Final question would it be quicker to install IP handsets? thank you
