hi guys
need a little help on this 1. it's a bit odd..
we have ip500v2 v7.0.33. pbx was on a public ip using sip only for in and out. no issues, bar quality every now and again.
we now have it behind a Sonicwall OS Enhanced 2400 using Transparent Mode, which means the PBX still sits on the public IP and uses the same route GW.
NAT rules are defined Any/Any for both in and out to sip servers and PBX.
works fine for about 5 minutes speech both ways then stops.

Now you are probably thinking what I am - bloody Sonicwall, but the strange this is that if I change my IP route and save it starts working again, then stops. I saw this before on an old IP500 with registration issues, stops sending but works after you save a config.

NAT type is Open Internet - use Topology is set to None.

thanks in advance

Try to do a continuous ping to the SIP provider, see if you get high ping times

Does you sip provider has a SBC? Try to connect straight to the SIP server and bypass the SBC.

TheTaker,

We have many (many) IPO 500's with SIP behind a Sonicwall. Here's what I found works:

Sonicwall Firmware must be 5.8.0.3 or newer (I think the newest is 5.8.1.0).

Sonicwall must have "SIP Transformations" enabled on the VOIP configuration. (Reboot after enabling).

IPO 500 should be set to "Blocking" for Firewall Type, have 0.0.0.0 for Public IP, 0 for binding refresh, use port 5060, and have a stun server configured (I like stunserver.org).

You mention your IPO is 7.0.33... guessing this was a typo and you meant 7.0.23 (or do you have some sort of PB?).

Thanks DavidCT. yes, typo, I was thinking of the ccr version. the reason I am doing it this way is to avoid using stun. we are putting in a sbc in about 2 months as stun is so unreliable. I'll try a combination of your suggestions though as see what comes of it.

thanks
TT

same results but going to try a stun server now. it's really looking like a bug in v7 versions. if i change a digit in ip route and change back, then do a merge save, it works again for a few minutes. Great, now i have to depend on the excellent avaya support

Hi,

We use Sonicwalls and there great until it comes to the IP Office SIP and TFTP traffic.

We have about 6 sites using IPO and SIP trunks though a Sonicwall, all of them to VoiceFlex and on similar IPO firmware, all but one on the same ISP. 4 X TZ210 1X3600 pro 1 TZ 190.

Most of the firmware on the sonicwalls are different. However every setup with regards the sonicwall has to be tweaked for each site. I now have to think twice before upgrading a sonicwall firmware as it breaks the sip trunk and takes normally a good hour to work out the correctly tweek it again. They seem to fiddle with timeout etc every release.

I say they are great because they work and they are simple, but you can't see what is going on under the hood, even Verbose logs does not show what it is doing. e.g. I had a Issue a long time ago with a 4620 over a VPN, It worked but the display did not (completely blank) after a lot of hair pulling and shipping kit to Sonicwall Tech support they turned round and said the IPO is sending out mal formed tftp packets (the display information) and the SW is dropping them, not a word in any of the logs.

Anyway a Tip re-boot the SW in-between setting changes, on several occasions I’ve tried every permutation with no luck then a reboot and everything works.

Sorry that doesn't help but I'm 99% sure the Sonicwall is the cause of your problem.

Thanks bm97ppc, I tend to agree with sonicwalls an how much trouble they are. I thought I was in luck when I found out about transparent mode options in enhanced Os version. No stun needed! :) what throws me is that if I save the exact same config it works again... I had the same issue with 4.1 and sip registration stopping

But it works using public ip, have tried all Nat types with reboot, good for 5 mins. I have the stun allowed now so I'll test and revert. Can't downgrade coz ccr

Re the VPN phone, itsa bug, if you logout and login again to phone screen comes back on.

TheTaker,

once the RTP traffic leaves the fibre, where does it go?
How many hops to the ITSP?
If you do a tracert when a call is working and then straight after a call fails, are they the same?

4 hops hsm, total time is 4ms to itsp. i have Port Restricted Cone Nat set now and using STUN, working fine. but don't want to depend on STUN. I am going to try some other NAT traversal types now and see if it stays up.

if yout itsp isnt doing the stun for you then you will have to depend on it, if you are behind a NAT router.

Is the fibre connecton a private link?

If you make a trace thru wireshark, do you see a codec change after a few minutes. I think the provider send a SDP nagotiation packet which get blocked at your router.

Here is some info on SDP and Cisco, ther might be an option like that in the Sonic;

TT,

On the SIP line config, do you have "Check OOS" enabled or disabled?
