A company I support has 5 licenses for Goldmine 5.7. Initially it appears that the server installation was not performed properly as it is not possible to connect a client to Goldmine. Due to this, I have three users who all have local copies of Goldmine on their PCs with a global contacts database which they all access on the server. This is not overly suitable as all three use each others PCs and are not able to see their own emails. My question is: can I just upgrade the installation on the server to incorporate the server functionality (still 5.7) and keep the contacts database, and how would I go about moving the users local mailboxes so that they can be accessed from any of the PCs.

any help would be most welcome

regards

Chris

Hi

What were the problems being experienced when trying to connect a client to the server installation? I can't see that there shouldn't be any reason why clients can't connect if the installation runs correctly on the server.

It sounds like that although you have a global contacts database the GoldMine system files, the GMBase folder in a dBase installation, is not global. Emails are stored in the Mailbox table which is part of the system files yet users emails are separated. This will also mean that users' calendars would also be separate. You need to verify that this is the case by checing the HELP | ABOUT | SYSTEM from each on the GoldMine installations and check where the Contact Files and GoldMine files are pointing.

To centralise the sytem you would need to firstly get the clients accessing the server installation and diagnose and problems there. Then you will need to create a transfer sets to consoldate the data into one database, depending on the set up that currently exists.

Hi Rob thanks for getting back to me

Basically I did not set up the install, when we created a new customer last week, we discovered that she was unable to access her account - we had made it on the server, and it was a local copy of goldmine that she was accessing with a global contacts database. When we installed Goldmine on her PC, we discovered that we were unable to connect the install to the server when it asks for a connection path none was possible. Hence the reason to essentially reinstall goldmine and set up the system as it should be. My queries really stem from this - can I just install goldmine over the top of the original install therefore keeping the settings - contacts database and upgrade this to a server install. I know that the mailbox is a global one and contains all the emails for each user, but is there a way of importing the stand-alone mailboxes from the clients PCs to the global mailbox. I know that I will have to do a reinstall on the clients PCs so that they can be client server installs. Any further help would be most grateful

Hi

Yes you can upgrade an install to a server install. As for the mailboxes then your are going to have to create transfer sets of data and retrieve into the one system to consolidate this data.

Best Regards

Hi Rob

thanks for all your help, we uninstalled the server install, reinstalled it as a proper shared server install, and tehn followed what you said about creating transfer sets with the mailboxes and calendars. it now works perfectly

thanks
