Is it possible that a handset near a speaker can be the source of hold music somehow? I understand this is a very crude way of doing it, assume you don't know the full story and try to answer the original question.

NO

On IP500 V2 systems an analogue extension port can be used as the source if you wire up the correct cable. Maybe works with an analog phone left of hook but I can't be bothered to try it.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

Both are right :

-You have a jack on the back where you can plug a source.
You must set the music source in system as external.

- An analog extension can be used as music source.
You must use the "other sources" in system configuration and enter XTN:[extension_Number]
Do not forget to set the Music source in Incoming Call Routes ;)

OK, lets skip right over the WHY, and lets focus on the fact that this will sound terrible.

The truth is just an excuse for lack of imagination.

Okay scratch that, is there a way to make a short code listen to what's plugged into the aux port without using it as hold music source? (*34) Currently hold music is a .wav.

If you have multiple MOH sources, you need to enter the source which you want to hear in the *34 code.

*340# for aux
*341# for the first .wav

etc

Can the alternative source be the external AUX and the primary be the .wav?

You can use the .wav file as primary and use an analog extension port as alternate 1 and feed it into the analog port.

Enter a name then as source XTN:123 (or whatever your port is)

program the analog extension as MoH source
