Basically what i want to do is very simple.

I have
Win2k server -> dsl router -> internet <- dsl router <- xp home machine

connecting my home machine to my little server at the office.

I do not want to use ipsec or any other 3rd party authentication software i want to use exactly what is supplied with windows.

Now I want to setup the win2k server as the vpn listen machine with the home machine connecting in to it.

However there is not a single step by step guide any where on the net about setting up a simple listen vpn option.

The server has a single lan card which has a 192.168.x.x op address and its the router which has the external op address however the router can port forward to the server.

The home pc is exactly the same setup on the lan address and port forwarding on the router.

If someone would be so kind as to post a simple step by step to creating a vpn server (listen connection) this would be greatly appreciated

Start here, from our friends at Microsoft: If you prefer screen shots, check here: If you use that one, ignore the very last line about port forwarding.

If you want a PPTP connection, your server side router will need to forward TCP on port 1723. You will also need pptp pass-through enabled.

If your work network and home network are using the same network address, you should change one or the other before you get too far.

Is it possible to vpn from one pc to another via the internet? Or, does on have to be a server such as a win2k server or xp pro type?

Just about any modern version of Windows will work for a client.

One end has to be the VPN server, and that requires a version of NT, 2000 or XP. The "workstation" versions only support serving one connection at a time, but they will work.

Thank you. And I'm being told that win 2k has to be win2k server. Not win2k pro... Would you agree?

Win 2K Pro will work fine . . . as long as you don't need to have more than one connection at a time.

If you need to have more than one connection in at once, you will need something else for your server.

I have a ton of questions because I've never set up vpn before:

Using a Linksys BEFSR41...(between the server and DSL modem) I have enabled PPTP messaging. Do I have to point a port (1723?) to the ip of the vpn server? If that's not the correct port, can you tell me where to look?
