Just starting to mess around with excel so sorry for the very basic question. In column A i have a list of numbers. Then in columns B,C,D,E i have some more numbers. In Cell 1F i want it to put the text "Action" if any numbers within B,C,D,E are greater than the single number in column A. If the are less than column A the i want it to show "OK" in cell 1F.

Hi cmunnelly,

It isn't entirely clear what you want to achieve.

To find out whether any of the numbers in column A is greater than any of the numbers in column B, use the formula:
=IF(MAX(A:A)>MIN(B:B),"OK","Action")

To find out whether the numbers A1 is greater than any of the numbers in column B, use the formula:
=IF(MAX(A1)>MIN(B:B),"OK","Action")
Copy this formula down as far as needed if you want to test a series of numbers in column A.

Cheers

Hey thanks that has pointed me in the right direction. Slight problem is the formula says action when the numbers are equel. When the numbers are equal i want it to say "OK". So in short i should have said Greater or equel to. Sorry this must sound really confusing, but the worrying thing is i know what i mean!!!!

Hi,

Try this one in F1 : =IF(MAX(B1:E1)>A1;"Action";"OK") then copy/paste the formula down as far as needed.

Rgds,

Tomtom

Hi cmunnelly,

In whichever version of the formula you're using, you could replace the '>' with '=>'.

Cheers

And if Tomtom's formula generates an error, then replace each semicolon ; with a comma , His version of Excel uses the semicolon as a separator, mine uses a comma.
