Simple Network

I have two computers one running XP Home the other 2000 Pro. There is a telephone line (NTL) with phone sockets near both computers, I want to network both computers so that I can share printers and a Broadband (NTL) internet connection. The computer running XP has an internal modem the other has an external modem. How can I set this up, thanks very much in advance.

do they have ethernet cards? which pc has the broadband connection and how is it connected? how far are the computers apart? is the phone lines that are near both pc's connected to each other and if so how many pairs does it have? "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

Thanks for replying.
Neither of the computers has an ethernet card, the one running XP has a PCI slot free the one running 2000 all the PCI slots are used. The one running XP is the one with the broadband connected, and the broadband is taken from the digital TV reciever. The computers are approx 12 Meters apart one upstairs one down. The phone line is connected and about 1 Meter from both computers,there is a 6core cable between them and 3core are used. The computer with XP has an internal modem the 2000 machine has an external modem.

it would be well worth your time to forget about the connecting phone lines and buy a wireless PCI ethernet card and a wireless USB ethernet device. then set-up internet connection sharing (ICS) making one the "host" and the other the "client". when seting up peer to peer wireless it is very simple with XP useing the ad-hoc setting on the cards. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

without ethernet cards they will not be networked. If the phone lines are two different numbers you could use some thing like pc anywhere and have one dial into the other, that is all the modems and phone lines will do. Otherwise I also reccomend wireless network using usb hardware.
