simple calculation

How would I go about finding the sum of a formula field? I have my formula field displayed in the group footer#2 I now need a sum of this formula field displayed as a total in group footer#1. The formula I'm using is :
Sum ({@Fomula Field})
then when I check this formula I get the following error :
The summary/running total field could not be created.
I know this should be simple but...

Basically its generates a weightings total, i.e if one use preformed 7 procedures with a weighting of "A" that would be the equivalent of 7 points if he/she also perfomed 6 "D" procedures that would be worth 72 points. I also need am overall total that would add all the weightings together so using the figures above this user preformed 13 procedures with a total of 79 points. Thanks very much for your time.

In your summary field: {#Exam count per cat}, are there any conditions that you've applied? What's the criteria for {#Exam count per cat}?

The {#Exam count per cat} running total is just a simple procedure count. I use it to ascertain the number of "A","B","C", etc.. Procedures. The report also groups by the procedure type (A,B,C, etc...), this running total is reset on the change of group.
