Silly Word Formatting Question

OK, this has got to be easy but it's stumped me:

Word has this habit of changing a series of underlines that I type into a continuous graphical line. So if I want to draw say and area on a form for the user to enter a response, Word likes to change this to a nicer looking graphical line. How do I stop this?

Secondly, once Word has done this, I seem to have problems getting rid of these strange lines.

Any thoughts?

Those aren't lines; they are "Borders," which Word (97 and up) is set to make any time you put in 3 or more hyphens, underscores, asterisks, or equal signs, then press Enter.

To delete the ones already made, put your cursor above it, then select Format --> Borders and Shading. Click "None." Click "OK."

To keep it from happening again, select Tools --> Auto Cancel Options. Click "Auto Format As You Type." Uncheck "Border Lines."

Word 97 uses titles "Auto Correct" and "Borders," but works in a similar fashion.
