How do you figure powers of two on a calculator?
If I could figure that out subnetting would be a breeze.

You can't , unless it is a Scientific calculator! CCNA

The calculator on Windows has a scientific mode.

Open Calculator. Select View and then scientific. This will then convert between dec, hex and bin.

You really need to be able to do these in your head as you wont have a calculator in the exam, and probably not in most real life situations.

Practice is the key.

Best of Luck
