Is the Nortel “Signaling Server” the same thing as a Gatekeeper or is the “Gatekeeper” a part or function of the Signaling server?

I believe the "Gatekeeper" is an application on a Signaling Server and is now known as NRS.

Signaling Server" is a misnomer. It started as a separate hardware platform which could run multiple different applications.

NOTES From a recent posting
Signaling Server" is a general term for the computing platform which is separate from the core CS 1000 CPU. It can run a myriad of software applications.

The Sig Server has 5 main functions:

SIP/H.323 Gateways to provide virtual ip trunks.

Terminal Proxy Server to support IP terminals.

Network Routing Service to provide dialplan for SIP/H.323 endpoints and gateways.

Element Manager and NRS Manager web management interface.

Application Server for Personal Directory, redial list and callers list for ip phones.

This should only be needed for ip phones???
