Siemens Hicom/Hipath USB to Seriel Adaptor

Just wondered if anyone could help me with any suggestions.

I have been a siemens hicom/hipath engineer for over 10 years and I am looking at upgrading my laptop. I am looking at getting a laptop that doesn't have any seriel ports and was wondering if anyone could suggect any usb to seriel convertors that they know will work with the siemens telephone systems.

When I last changed my laptop a couple of years ago I tried a couple of convertors but couldn't find one that would work with the siemens kit. As it took a long time to find a suitable laptop with a seriel port within budget, I would prefer to use a usb adaptor.

Any suggestions please.....

This is a PITA - Especially with the Hicom 150 which actually seems to refuse to work with anything but a real port. The best results I have had to date come from the following:

Black Box #IC199A-R3 USB - DB9M Converter

Black Box #IC138A-R3 USB - DB25M Converter.

Both are around $35 I think.

The latter being the one I use most often to conenct to the switches onsite.

I have never had anything but the real thing work on the Hicom 150, and keep an old Win98 laptop around just for that one switch.

One more possibility will be the programming via ISDN.I am living in the US now only for 2 month and I don't know if the necessary parts are available here. But in any way, I can help you. Send me your e-mail via personal message, I will try to get this from Germany.In any way programming via ISDN is much quicker than via this cable!
The next possibility would be programming via LAN, but not for the old Hicom.

I have a new IBM Lenovo laptop - waiting for a USB/Serial adaptor. Sounds like it may not work though. I'll make note of those posted by donb01. I've heard Belkin makes them as well. I've made a crossover cable and set my pc ip in the range of the 3000 and got in that way - but can be a pain if changing ip addresses. I also occasionally need to connect directly into a Spectralink RF phone gateway via a serial connection. I wonder if the adaptor would work with that.

I have not had any luck at all with the "cheap" USB - Serial adapters (I purchased from Wal-Mart, target, etc) with many devices. Some don't care, but a lot of the ones that are psycho about flow control do. I did have relatively good luck with a cheap one made by IOGEAR but I haven't seen them around in a while to buy any more. The ones I mentioned have been pretty reliable for me.

I also do the Spectralink thing, but I have a permanent cable installed to a junky PC in the switchroom for that. You would think they could bring CHK3000 at least to the end of the 20th century!

I have a sweex serial usb adaptor and it works on Panasonic and siemens systems systems
only one it would not work with was the Panasonic 612 system as that needs to control the port as a capi interface.

any other serial device works no problem (GSM routers etc)

The Digi Edgeport 101-1001-15 works well. I have been using it for several years on Siemens HiCom and also on Bristol Babcock SCADA equipment but it costs about $89.00

We use Fritz card express or just thru LAN. For the Fritz card express you need a S0 adapter.
Serial is slow, and ISDN (S0) is fast and also can be used for remote maintenance.
