I successfully installed SK98 in Vista Home Premium 64bit following the guidance for installing in Vista. The only new problem (aside from the earlier problem with To Do) is the clock not adjusting to Daylight Savings time. It sets itself to 1 hour earlier than computer time (Daylight Savings Time in Calif). I checked thru the ini file and couldn't find anything that looked like a good fix. It's not a stopper as far as using SK98, but it is inconvenient when in the event section of calendar indicating an activity at a given time and setting the alarm for notification. Anyone have an idea on how to fix this?

Thanks Jim

That fixed the problem. The time is now correct. :)

How exactly does one install Sidekick 98 in Vista Home Premium 64 Bit?. I understand about install in a directory on the "C" drive, rather than in Programs(X86), however, When I try to install, I get the error message about incompatability, but there is no option to continue anyway. All I can do is to X out the error message and stare longingly at my skw98sea.exe file.

I installed SK98 in a Starfish folder I created on the C: drive. It installed with no problem. Using the programs(X86) folder would not work. C:\Starfish\Sidekick98 works just fine in Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Hope this helps.

Dear Wafflehead,

Right click on the install.exe and choose to install under compatability with Win2000.

I have tried compatibility with XP, and Windows 2000, and still can't get past the error message. The error message won't give me an option to continue anyway.

I had a similar problem with Nero 6 Ultra, but the error message was different, and it gave me the option to continue anyways.

Would there be a Window program setting somewhere that would allow a bypass of this message?

I run everything as the administrator. I have sidekick.exe set for compatibility with XP Pro SP2. When I opened the CD drive to install SK98 the first file is setup.exe. When that is clicked it opens the installation program. I clicked on install and it proceeded. I changed the location as noted earlier to c:\Starfish\Sidekick98 and the installation went smoothly. I can't find your skw98sea.exe file anywhere on my installation disk or in my installed sidekick. Is that a typo or are you using a compressed installation file and not the original disk? That could be the problem.

I have a Dell Inspiron machine w\ Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP1. Do you have the SP1 version of Vista? A lot of my older programs work with SP1 that would not work with the original Vista. I did get the rejection notice with other older software even when using the compatibility setting, but there was no problem installing Sidekick as described above.

Yes, I do have SP 1. The problem may be fthe skw98sea.exe file. It was so long ago remembering is difficult. I bought Sidekick 95, or it came bundled with another program, I just don't remember. I leagaly own it, but do not have a CD. At some point I contacted Starfish, and they gave me a key to their FTP server which is where I downloaded The SKW98sea.exe file.

Alls well that ends well, I found the original install files at It is installed and running just fine.

This (subject) is my first post on Tech Tips, there may be many more.

Thaks for all your help.

I wonder if anyone has had experience with SK98 and 64 bit Windows 7 ?

I am using the W7 Beta release and have not been able to get the install program to even open.

I did download the disks as described for Vista 64, but the setup just stalls and never opens. I have tried this in all compatibility modes to no avail.

I am surprised as I have gotten some pretty arcane stuff to run under 7 with very little effort and I had SK98 working under Vista 64.

The only other possibility is that the compatibility plug-ins are not yet fully developed in the W7 Beta release.

It seems as if it wants to open but just fizzles out. I installed Disk1 -7 in a separate directory on the C: drive end expanded the files into each one.

Any Ideas out there?

THanks

John

Well I got it to install by following the instructions for creating the disks on my c: drive, but only when I attempted it in SAFE mode.

That being said I still could not get it to run in normal mode of Windows 7 64 bit

I then re-installed it in safe mode, this time allowing it to install under Program Files(x32)directory. After that I was able to actually open and run SK98 in Safe Mode, but still could not open in Normal mode.

Thw banner would open but stall on 5 bars of the opening slider, always in the same place no matter which compatibility version I chose.

I always ran as Administrator and once ran it in 640X 480 but even then i could not get it to open.

I'm out of ideas for the moment...Anybody else?

John

John,

Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads available there for additional assistance and feedback.

Thank you but I can't imagine microsoft would encourage me to continue with 1998 software when I could be using Outlook,
But thanks for the suggestion. Perhaps it will work when the final release of 7 is out and the compatabillity options are more stable.

John

I followed your directions to the T and was able to finally install SK98 in Windows 7 64 bitt final release where I was unable in the RC version. Many thanks
