I get the program to load and I got my data loaded...and saved (?) I put question mark because I saved my backup from my old computer (xP) but it will not save/keep any new data beyond that. Anything I add or change reverts back to the backup data when I hit save. Does anyone know what the heck is up and how to overcome it? Many thanks. Sakittay

Oh, and it's Sidekick98. Sorry, I left that out. Of course it downloaded from the HenryW site, so I guess it was self-explanatory. Sakittay

Jumping back in with my flight of ideas :) ...If there is no cure for this, at least I have my old data. I just looked and see that I don't have my calandar data, but it isn't critical. If I can't add data to my contacts, then it may be time to "move on." Does anyone have a nearly comparable program to Sidekick? Thanks. Sakittay

Hi Sakittay,
It looks like you have read-only files. If so...
I think if you transfer files to a CD and then to Windows8, chances are you have read-only. Also the internal back-up in Sidekick98 was designed for Windows95 to turn up in drive "A" : maybe bit out of date.

If you have BUSINESS.SKCard for example, try saving it (SaveAs)as BUSINESSX.SKCard and edit that then save. The idea there is that the new BUSINESSX.SKCard will have the standard attributes and will not be read-only.
The other idea would be to copy your originals to a USB pen or SD Card and access them directly in Windows8 Sidekick98 on the Toolbar with File, Open cardfile, then find the drive, then the file you want. Edit a line and save it. This should work and you should then be able to copy all to your userdata. The thinking here is that with USB/SD it stays the same file.

These days, I use Dropbox to transfer and can access Dropbox directly from SK98 which is quite a big plus as transfers of SK userdata appear to be a bit dodgy.

Sakittay, check out my new thread regarding a possible replacement for SK98. Essential Pim. There is a link in that post.

I have much the same problem as Sakittay. I got Sidekick 98 to load on Windows 7 Pro and it looks fine but will not save any amendments to the contacts cards. I changed the read only SKCARD files and the USERDATA folder to read/write but after clicking on save and closing the card files all the amendments are lost. I tried re-naming the SKCARD files as suggested by jimalex and they then become editable but there is something strange about them as they are invisible to Windows Explorer (although the old files are visible). Also I can't find a way to delete the old SKCARD files. Can anybody help?

Dear RLH88,

It would appear that the files are in a different place than you think. Which is why you cannot find them in Explorer.
The original files are in one folder and when you 'save as' them under a different name you are putting them in another folder

Check that out as it appears to be the only explanation.

Regards
Jim

“.. can´t find a way to delete the old SKCARD files”

Hi RLH88,
I write this with the feeling it must be wrong but inside the SK programs you cannot delete the cardfile (SKCard file for SK98). You can delete a card only.
It´s the same for Microsoft Word – you can delete text but not the doc. Adobe does not let you delete a pdf file. I must be missing something.

I use a File Manager to delete as I can see all the files and make sure I´m deleting the right ones.

We all have Windows Explorer:
Click on Computer C
Find Starfish\sidekick 98\userdata
Choose the old files to delete (as a block or one-by-one)
Click Organise, Delete
You´ll be asked if you want to send them to the Recycle Bin

Like many, I'm reluctantly moving from WinXP to Win7. I'm surprise to find that others are still using SideKick98. Thanks to Henry W. He gives me hope that I'll still be able to quickly access years worth of notes placed in my Sidekick Contacts "Log" field. From what I've read, there is no way to export the contents of the Sidekick Contacts "Log" field into another application. I believe I have found a way to export the contents of the standard contact fields, but not the "Log" field. If there is a way, please alert me to the process.

Dear buczacz

There IS a way to get most of your Contact Log into another program Sidekick97/Internet Sidekick will export a Sidekick2 95 98 or 99 cardfile contact log together with the cardfile as just another field into a Tab delimited Text file(my preferred option).

It is a while since I converted any through that method so I am a bit hazy, hang on I'll try it out to see how many characters it will cope with....... I managed to 'save as' a contact log containing 2,571 characters!!!
There you go.

This is slightly different problem. I have two Win7-pro machines. Using the Henry W. approach, I successfully loaded SideKick-98 onto the newer Dell "Optoplex" machine. Works just fine.

Today I went to install on older Win7-pro DELL " Precision" machine. I placed the install files in the C:\SKtemp\ directory and selected Setup.exe. But the "progress window" never shows up. I remember when doing the installation on the newer Win7-pro machine, that I initially did not find the progress window, but somehow I eventually got it to come up. I don't recall the details.

When I clicked on EXIT, I do do not get the license window. Eventually a window opens saying the application had not installed correctly, and indeed that was the case.

The problem may be that the older Win7-Pro machine has SideKick98 installed in the WinXP virtual machine, but it is closed down while I'm trying to install under Windows7. Given that might be problem, I went to uninstall Win98 from Virtual WinXP, but machine reported that the Uninstall routine was corrupted.

I am seeking to install under Win7 because under Win7 Sidekick98 opens and closes much much faster and I possibly avoid conflicts with other Virtual WinXP applications.

Any ideas?

Re: Henry W. solution & Prior posts under "buczacz" ID.

HENRY W. WORKS - On 23 April, I reported Henry W. solution worked on one of my Win7-pro machines but not another. Subsequent to that posting I realized that the problem might be in the configuration of the displays. New machine had one VGA display while old machine had two displays, VGA & Digital with Digital as prime. Today, after interchanging the displays, Henry W. installation went smoothly.

CONTACT LOG STILL EVASIVE - On 6Apr14, James33 replied to my query regarding exporting of the "Contact Log" from SideKick98. His suggestion was to use SideKick97/Internet. Can someone suggest a safe place to get that application? Once I can pull out the Contact LOG data, I can start working on phasing out SideKick. It has worked great for me for nearly twenty years, but it is time to move on.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.
