Dear ScotchEgg,
Is Carbonite an Image program?
It is almost impossible to re-install a program as an image (i.e. Putting the folders and the files back where they were on the drive) because the .dll (Dynamic link libraries) are not registered with the operating system,
I have also repeatedly said that the program should not be put in the Program Files folder as files are changed by sidekick on boot up and I believe, Windows 7 won't allow that. You have to put sidekick in a folder (C:\Starfish)on the root of the C:\ drive.
Even if you individually registered the .dlls I would imagine that they would point to the location of Sidekick on your last computer.
I'm not trying to flog the program, I'm just saving you a lot of grief. Mind you, if you have the original disk you could install it from there in the location I have suggested.

Carbonite is a back up service -off-site. I can get into my "crashed computer" in safe mode and start up sidekick, I can also start up sidekick from the thumbdrive I copied it onto from that damaged computer- when trying to start up the program from the thumbdrive on the new computer running Windows 7, I get the message: "The program can't start because the TIMESYINC.dll is missing from your computer. Try resinstalling the program to fix this problem."

The reason you cannot get into the program is that it is not installed on the WINDOWS7 machine.
I said before, you need to install the program on the Windows7 machine.
If you have the original CD get it out and install the program and then copy all your cardfiles, calendar files and expense files etc over to the Userdata folder on that machine and then open Sidekick and in Tools|Preferences|General check that that folder is the default working directory.
You can then open them in Sidekick.
Let us know how you get on.

I found I had the program, I loaded it onto the office PC which is Windows XP and everything was fine. I even loaded it on the flash drive and that was fine. Brought nit to the new PC which has Windows7 and I get the message "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windos you're running. Check your computer's system information-see whether you need an x86 (32 bit) or x64 (64 bit) version of the program and then contact the software publisher".

Let me clarify the last sentence- when I put the flash drive in the Windows 7 machine the I thought I would be able to run Sidekick (off-machine) succesfully, as I had done earlier today on the XP machine - however I get the message concerning TIMESYNC.dll.
The reason that the program runs from the flash drive on the XP machine is that the program is installed on that machine and therefore all the program dynamic link libraries (.dll files) are registered on that machine. The program is not installed on the Windows 7 machine so as soon as it looks for them it fires up an error message.
You must install Sidekick from your installation CD on the Win7 machine. To do that you must first check that you have the compatibility mode installed on that machine. Go to the Microsoft website and check that it is installed or that it is possible to be installed. Win7 home basic does not have the mode installed afaik but all the other versions I believe do have it. Once you have it installed you can right-click on the Sidekick install program and install it as if it was a Windows XP machine.

I followed your instructions and that of the Microsoft web-site, I right clicked and went through all the various previous versions of windows and each time when I went to click on the program, the same message each time -"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. It's as if nothing is happening- I disabled Symantec Endpoint Protectioj thinking this might be the problem- could there be anything else blocking this?

OK tried it in Safe Mode but nothing. My old XP machine was XP service pack 3. but there's just no reaction when I go through the motions of compatibility on this machine- just the same message I mentioned before. Meanwhile on the office XP machine where I loaded SK99, SK is running happily. I'm wondering what's blocking this on this machine.
Do CTRL|ALT|DELETE and then Task Manager will come up.
End all the tasks visible on that screen and then try and install.
If the problem is with a background process, you will have to go to the processes tab and work out which of the processes are unnecessary and right click on them and choose to "End Process Tree."
Make sure you have all your current documents saved BEFORE you proceed to that!!!!
See how that goes...

I see you had already tried safe mode, so the above may not add anything to the equation; but try the processes tab thing!
