New user of sidekick, using XP. Have just installed 98 with patch (as per instructions).Entered info into calendar and decided to test the printer. Printer spools on the screen and my printer symbol appears for a sceond but no print. Found Sidekick dropped a file into my userdata everytime called 'USB001orPort'. I have reinstalled the software but no joy. The only printing that it will do is to a PDF file creater 'Jaws', I am hoping to print my own organiser to Filofax size
SK98 is a great organiser and if I ever get it to print I will use it.
Could someone help please.
PS Just tryed the 95 version and that does the same.

Dear TopBuoy,
What is the File extension/File Type of USB001orPort?

Sidekick for Windows 2.0 will not print in Windows XP and I really use portions of the program, but STARFISH and BORLAND are no help what-so-ever. Help Please!

First of all:
Dear TopBuoy,
The fact that Sidekick prints to a .pdf file but not to the printer would suggest that either something is wrong with the printer settings or that the PDF file creater 'Jaws'
is set as the Default Printer
Could the name of that file
USB001orPort
be one that you gave the .pdf file that was created when you sent it to 'Jaws'?
Go to
StartMenu|Settings|Printers
and check that the (USB? connected) Printer is set as the Default one.

Dear NonTech405,
Borland do not own Starfish anymore (Since 6-7 Years ago I think),
Sidekick2, Sidekick95, Internet Sidekick, Sidekick97, Sidekick98 are also unsupported anywhere else but here(AFAIK).

See faq807-3761 For the Address of the Download site for the above programs. Alternatively you will get better feedback if you start a new thread where more people will see you.
I know it seems a related question but it is a different program from Sidekick98 and consequently the same answer won't necessarily work.
Please don't take offence, it is only meant as a suggestion for getting your question seen by the most people and answered quicker.

Hi Jim
USB001orPort is all the file is called. When I look at the file it just has the type as 'FILE' below the name. Having tried to print different parts of side Kick , I get different named files stored in my user data i.e. 'USB001DFCreat' etc. but FILE is the type
Having surfed the net for what appears to be hours for the answer this appears to be my last chance of a result.

Dear TopBuoy,
When you go to print a document or whatever, does the Printer Dialog come up and what is on the Title bar, or does the thing get printed straight away.

Sidekick does not give you the option of which printer to send it to, it just sends it to whichever printer is set as the DEFAULT printer in the Printers Folder
(In WindowsXP Not in the Sidekick program)..
As I said before
Close down Sidekick and then:
Go to
StartMenu|Settings|Printers
Right-Click on the Inkjet or the Laser(or whatever printer you have) and choose
Set as Default
Start Sidekick again
Try Printing.

Jim
I'm SORTED!
Thanks
Thanks
Thanks

I did what you said but still no luck and then when I was crawling all over my HP 920C printer setting I came across Automatic Image Enhancement which I disabled and it printed.

Many thanks.......again

TopBuoy

Dear TopBuoy,
Have you tried re-enabling Automatic Image Enhancement since you turned it off, and seeing if the problem re-occurs?
Just to be absolutely certain that it was the cause...
To be sure to be sure!
(p.s. No one in Ireland ever says 'to be sure to be sure')

To be sure...........you was right again.
I turned it back on and yes it still printed.
Not sure what went on then..........lets blame XP ?
Anyway ,I'm up and running.
Except i cannot now backup my data , it says that I do not have enough space. I have 40Gb of space . all I'm doing is backing upto an other folder which I use to store data ready for backing on to a CD.( keeps all my backup files in one place)

Any joy on this fault now?

Dear TopBuoy,
See the following threads for some info regarding the problem:
thread807-478671
thread807-689847
thread807-508008
I would recommend SecondCopy as a better solution for backing up
It can be got from:
Here is a description of what it does:
Second Copy® 2000 is the perfect backup product designed for Windows 9x/Me/NT4/2000/XP you have been looking for. It makes a backup of your data files to another directory, disk or computer across the network. It then monitors the source files and keeps the backup updated with new or changed files. It runs in the background with no user interaction. So, once it is setup you always have a backup of your data some where else.

Jim
Thanks again.
From my short time on Tek Tips I'm impressed.
To be sure.................SideKick 98 is now in use.
Its good to hear what other people are using to back-up Data.
I use Nero which does a good job as a general Backup tool to CD.
I'm getting a second Hard drive so Second Copy could be very useful.

So I will look it up.

Thanks

This may be related to thread 807-755985. I recently switched from an HP-LaserJet-Series-II printer on the parallel port to HP-LaserJet-1000-Series on the USB. After switching, when I seek to print a Sidekick98 calendar in landscape orientation, a message flashes across the screen that the information is being spooled to the printer, but nothing happens. (Potrait orientation works ok) When I seek to print a report from Quicken98 in landscape, the output is printed in portrait with the text running off the right side of the sheet. I successfully print all Microsoft Office97 applications and in all page orientations to the HP-LJ-1000 over my network from two other machines, one running Win98 and one running WinXP.
The printer is presently connected to Win98SE Pentium IV machine with an Intel motherboard. The machine reports that I'm using driver 5.51.926.0 with user interface 5.51.1519.0 and firmware 20011207. It does not appear that newer drivers are available.

I'm interested in solution for Sidekick98. As I plan to transition to Quicken2003, I assume the Quicken printing problem will go away.

Dear TopBuoy
I have just installed sidekick on my new computer, running XP. I was able to transfer all the data from Sidekick, bukt I don't have the version 98 disc, so my data seems to be useless. And I have some 500 entries that have taken me years to accukmulate.
Can I beg, borrow of copy your diisc, ver 98 so I can utilize my data.
Your help greatly aplpreciated.

To Ran12 re getting SideKick98.exe files. SideKick98 can be downloaded from several sites on the internet. Just do a search on Google for "Sidekick98 download

Dear buczacz and Robert Nathan,
the main download site is down at the moment but try the link on
faq807-3761
for the email address of the guy who set it up.

Re my post of 4April2004: For several months SideKick98 has printed just fine to HP- LJ1000 USB on a WinXP-pro/SR-2 machine except that it will not print calendars landscape.

Two days ago, perhaps as a result of a Windows security update, SideKick98 will no longer print. It indicates data is going to the spoiler, but nothing happends. Any ideas people.

Dear buczacz,

If it is a USB printer, disconnect the printer and then re-connect and see if it does the business!

I believe I've tried the equivalent (turning power to printer off and then back on again after computer has reported loss of USB linked hardware), and it does not help the SideKick98 printing problem. The printer, an HP LJ1000 on a USB1.0 port, works just fine with all Microsoft applications, and it will also print web pages being viewed with Firefox.

I'm reticent to uninstall and then reinstall sidekick because I'll have to also dig up the patches (two as I recall) that are needed to make it run right under WinXP.

I'm going to continue to explore the issues.

Dear Buczacz,

The method I use is to disconnect the USB plug and then re-connect but I do have a hub at the front of the computer which makes that easy.

There is only 1 Patch to apply (containing 2 files).

see here: faq807-3761

Just as an idea, check to see when the last date that the Sidekick.ini file was altered.
Don't edit it!

Printing problem has gone away, I know not why. It certainly was not related to restarting the machine; the problem persisted after several cold boots. The problem may have been related to something in Microsoft's Windows, Norton / Symantec's Anti-Virus software or SpyBot's software. They are updated daily. Once again, Sidekick98 now prints to HP LJ 1000 on USB port operating under WinXP-pro w/ SR-2 and other latest updates. Thanks for suggestions.
