I often encounter shutdown problems on my W98 OS. The computer stops at the "Windows is shutting down" screen and I have no other choice but to turn the power off (even if the "It is now safe..." message didn't appear). So the next time I restart my computer it always checks for disk error(s) and it sometimes restores the registry setting too. Just recently, it failed to restore a good backup of my registry setting asking me to restart the computer over and over again. It says "Backing up registry setting..." then "Restoring registry setting..." then "Restart". I tried to re-install W98 but the problem persists. So I hope you guys out there help me on this one.

By the way, my computer is connected to a Win-NT Server. Both computers have Intel-PIII-500 processors.

it is a known bug in windows98, try the microsoft site for any bugfixes

regards,

Raymond

There is a myriad of reasons why this happens, but it all
boils down to w98. I'm using w98se. I don't know if that makes a difference between the versions. The latest
cause to a system was a patch I needed for VIA chipset.
You might want to check to see if there are any tsr's lingering around. If you e-mail me I'll send you a list
of possible causes. A little more info on your system would
be helpful. I do not know what, if any possible causes being connected to the server would do.Microsoft has a patch
for this problem at their sight. It hasn't worked for me, but it has for others.
are you using symantec norton antivirus? If so it's probably because the auto protect feature is on. Disable it and it should be okay or try to get and updated version of the live trial.

This is a common problem with any version of Win98.

The main cause is the amount of Mapped drives that you have.
The only solution is a temporary patch from Microsoft but it will re-occur again and again.

I look after 30 units on a NT setup and half are down with the problem. The patch has worked fine on 6 that have reduced the number of drives mapped. The other 9 are still mapping 6 or more drives.

It also happens to stand alone machines that have drives over 6.4Gb that are split up to 4 or more drives.

The best thing I have found to aliviate this situation is to limit the number of drives to 3 at any one time and to download the patch for each unit.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Cheers Hunter.
There is a patch available on the MSN Website for this shutting down problem download this file and your problems are over.

Yes, there is a Micro$oft patch to "fix" this. It actually works for a while.

Paul
Paul J. Stiles
stilespj@mindspring.com

The patch did not correct the problem on my W98.

Rik
Rik Rasmussen
hrasmussen@nc.rr.com
<a href= Rasmussen
Communications Maintenance Supervisor
For starters, disable fast shutdown in system configuration utility. Also, check for a bad (messed up, corrupt, etc.) exit sound. If not then go to MOFT's site and check their fifty ways to leave your windows...
Bill

I have seen this problem occur in some systems that are loading a driver for ACPI power management. I have been able to correct this problem by disabling power management in the BIOS as well as setting the plug and play operating system option in the BIOS to yes. I have seen this problem occur many times for many different reasons but I've not seen this one addressed in the posts yet so I chose it as my response. Hope this helps you.

Thanks guys!

I tried Microsoft's suggested workaround for this problem but it didn't work. I will try fixing it using your suggestions but I'm not really convinced any of it will solve the problem for good (based on your experiences).

At <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> there are several "fixes" under the general terms "Windows 98SE Shutdown Problems". The one relative to the mapped drives is dated May 22, 2000. Its description is as follows:

"This update resolves the "Windows 98 Second Edition Mapped Drives Shutdown Update" issue, where Windows may stop responding if there are a significant number of mapped network drives on your computer. The larger the number of drives that are mapped, the more likely the problem may occur."

Since I have applied this patch, shutdowns have been successful. I have a minimum of 8 drives mapped to network drives -- sometimes more; but usually at least 8.
